Keep Calling! Tell Your Senators to Stop Harmful Bush Budget Cuts |
|
You’ve got a chance today to help working and low-income families who count on Head Start, Meals on Wheels, child care, energy assistance and other vital education, nutrition and social services.
The U.S. Senate will vote today, perhaps early this afternoon, on a bipartisan amendment to add some $7 billion to the fiscal year 2007 budget resolution now on the Senate floor.
Call your senators and let them know you want them to support the amendment by Sens. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa).
The budget resolution is patterned after President George W. Bush’s budget proposal, which, in a nutshell, backs heavy and harmful cuts in working family and low-income programs and once again gives tax breaks to the wealthy.
(After you make your calls, check out the AFL-CIO analysis of Bush’s budget and its impact on worker programs and services.)
An amendment similar to the Specter–Harkin Amendment failed on a 50–50 tie vote Tuesday. Your phone calls can make a difference.
Call toll free at 1-800-459-1887 and ask to speak to your senator. When you get through to the office, it’s a simple, two-part message:
- “Please tell Sen._______________ to support the Specter–Harkin amendment to the budget resolution.
- Please tell Sen._____________ to oppose any budget resolution that will force harmful cuts in vital programs for people in need and to oppose tax breaks that take away from those needed services.
Be sure to call both your senators.
