If It Barks Like a Dog and Whinnies Like a Horse, Must Be…A Bad Boss

Today is the last day to cast your vote on the nation’s worst boss—voting ends at noon. Working America, the AFL-CIO community affiliate, is winding up its five-week My Bad Boss Contest, and there have been some real, well, losers.

Like the employer who told his part-time staff person she had to work longer hours even though she wanted to spend more time with her dying mother.

Or the boss who made his employee pay for his own chair at work.

And then there’s the fellow who dubs himself Karsh in Georgia, who says his new boss wrecked a well-functioning, creative team through back-biting, race-bating, verbal abuse and inappropriate snooping into people’s personal lives. Not to mention her penchant for making animal noises:

To make matters worse, she makes barnyard noises at inappropriate times. If she’s angry, she’ll bark and growl like a dog. If she’s tired, she whinnies like a horse. Mostly, she just walks up and down the hall making cicada-like noises. Her actions and behavior are the main reason we’ve had 50 percent turnover in the past year in our office. 

Visitors to the My Bad Boss site gave his entry the most votes this week, making him the fifth weekly winner and new owner of A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses: Dealing with Bullies, Idiots, Back-Stabbers and Other Managers from Hell, by Gini Graham Scott. All weekly winners automatically are in the running for the grand prize—a one-week vacation getaway and $1,000 toward airfare, compliments of Union Privilege.

Or as Franken, one of Working America’s contest commentators, says:

…you can see that there really aren’t any bad bosses, just bad employees. At least that’s what we like to say in the executive washroom!
