New AFL-CIO Online: En Espanol
More than 18 million Latinos live in the United States, and many work for low wages and often are exploited by unscrupulous employers. In fact, a new Bureau of Labor Statistics report shows that among immigrant Latino workers, the job death toll increased to 625 in 2005 from 596 in 2004.
Now, at the AFL-CIO’s new Spanish-language website, Latinos and other Spanish-speaking workers can learn about health and safety on the job, their rights at work, immigration and political action.
Link to En Espanol directly from the AFL-CIO website, www.aflcio.org.
The site also features the latest news of interest to Latino workers, such as the AFL-CIO’s new partnership with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON). The agreement paves the way for AFL-CIO central labor councils and state federations and NDLON’s worker centers to cooperate on issues ranging from workplace rights to immigration reform to health and safety and other job-related concerns.
It is critical that unions begin to speak in Spanish to Latino workers, says Alexandra Acosta, communications and policy analyst for the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA). A Spanish-language site is a strong organizing tool, she says, because it shows that the union movement cares about all workers and makes it easier for Spanish-speaking workers to gain the information they need to assert their rights.
LCLAA is one of seven AFL-CIO constituency groups—the labor movement’s bridges to diverse communities.
