USW Union Strikes Goodyear |
The USW International Union (USW) struck the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. today at 1 p.m. Some 14,000 USW members work at 12 Goodyear plants in 10 states. The union and company had been working under a day-to-day extension of a contract that expired in July. But the union issued a notice Monday that it intended to strike if a new contract was not reached by today.
In 2003, says USW Executive Vice President Ron Hoover, the union agreed to concessions, including plant closure, to help the then-troubled tire maker. Now, says Hoover:
Goodyear has rebounded and other stakeholders have been rewarded accordingly. Now the Company seems determined to only take more away from our members. The company left us with no option. We cannot allow additional plant closures after the sacrifices we made three years ago to help this company survive.
