UAW President: Bankruptcy as a Management Tool |
|
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger sat down with syndicated columnist George Will Oct. 27 to share his thoughts on the state of the auto industry, including Delphi’s bankruptcy tactics, the value unions can bring to workers and global trade.
On Delphi:
There’s a new business practice of using bankruptcy as a management tool.
On trade:
If we’re in a race to bottom, which we are, if we’re going to chase low wages, nobody’s going to win. Nobody can win. What should every country do that’s involved in trade? There should be human rights. We shouldn’t have child labor. There should be workers rights…We should have environmental protection. We should have protection from import surges.
On union value:
Without the workers having a union to represent then, to work out attrition agreements to represent them in the bankruptcy court….Who as an individual, without a union, could stand up to that? Who’s got the money to go against Delphi’s high-powered attorneys. Who could take them on about how they’ve taken care of themselves.
