New AFL-CIO Recruitment Service a Big Boost for Union Employment Outreach

Charles Taylor from the AFL-CIO Center for Strategic Research describes a new service the center launched to enable affiliated unions to rapidly recruit top-notch researchers and campaign staff for organizing efforts.

The AFL-CIO recently launched an expanded résumé posting service that makes it easier for affiliates seeking to hire campaigners and researchers to find promising prospects. Says Ken Zinn, director of the AFL-CIO Center for Strategic Research:

Research plays a crucial role in union strategic campaigns to support organizing and bargaining, and there is growing demand for strategic researchers and campaigners across the labor movement. We’re doing our part to help fill that need.

The center is part of the AFL-CIO Organizing Department and it maintains the recruitment service.

The résumé posting service builds on a researcher recruitment program created in 2000 in response to growing demand at affiliated unions for qualified strategic researchers. The popularity of the posting service has led to a major technological upgrade, expansion of the strategic campaigner prospect pool and expanded access to affiliates. 

A new résumé posting site provides a unique way for researcher and campaigner prospects to get résumés in front of union hiring managers around the country. Posting résumés is simple and free at: www.aflcio.org/researchjobs/. 

Affiliates benefit from having access to a pool of interesting researcher and campaigner prospects in a variety of locales. Nearly half of the 300-plus prospects who have posted résumés in the past three months are pursuing or have completed master’s degrees or above. Most have union experience as members, leaders or paid staff, while around 40 percent are new to the union movement.

This is among the first self-submitting résumé systems in the U.S. union movement, in which application materials posted online by prospects are transferred automatically into a secure, highly searchable database that is accessible online to approved users. Affiliates and individual prospects are encouraged to take advantage of this innovative recruitment service.
