Stuck in the Health Care Hustle? Send Your Story to Working America

by Stephanie Taylor, Mar 14, 2007

Are you caught in the “health care hustle?” Have you experienced long waits in an emergency room or high bills that weren’t covered by insurance? Have you gotten pinched in the “hustle” of hospitals and insurance companies, big pharmaceutical giants and doctors out to make a buck?

Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, is launching a new campaign today, “In the Heart of the Health Care Hustle” to offer a forum for discussing the nation’s broken health care system—and to see what we can do about it. You can share your story and read stories by others here.

We all know that America’s working families are facing a health care crisis. Nearly 47 million U.S. residents have no health insurance and the numbers keep growing. Millions more worry about losing the coverage they have. Medical debt is now the most common cause of bankruptcy. Something has to be done.

The AFL-CIO Executive Council passed a statement last week in support of building upon the Medicare program to cover all Americans. (Get the details here.)

Now join Working America and the AFL-CIO in this national conversation by visiting the new “In the Heart of the Health Care Hustle” website. Next week, we’ll post some of the most compelling stories here.

We’ll also talk about some of the industries standing in the way of meaningful health care reform. First in the line of fire: greedy corporations. Can’t wait….

In 1948 the U.N. wisely adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Included in these rights was the right to healthcare and the right to organize labor unions.

As a result of our government’s refusal to recognize these basic human rights we have a very low percentage of organized workers and a healthcare system that does not work for most of us.

Solution? Over 250 labor organizations have endorsed House Resolution 676 a bill that would improve upon and expand Medicare coverage to ALL residents of the United States and it’s territories. 676 makes sense and all trade unionists should ask their Congressional representative to co-sign this most important bill! Universal healthcare can become a reality, it is up to all of us!
