Fast Track to Nowhere: No Job Is Safe Anymore

Bookmark and Share

by James Parks, Apr 11, 2007

Fast Track trade policies that allow the Bush administration to push trade deals through Congress without allowing lawmakers to ensure the deals don’t destroy good U.S. jobs are a threat to communities across our nation. A new video, “Fast Track to Nowhere,” by the Machinists News Network, shows how the community of Galesburg, Ill., was devastated when Maytag moved jobs out of the town to Mexico.

In the video, reporters talk with members of Congress, business and grassroots leaders about how to make our trade policies pay off for everyone, not only multinational corporations. The video is especially timely because Fast Track, which was passed in 2002, expires June 30 and President Bush is fighting to renew it. Working families strongly opposed the 2002 legislation and the AFL-CIO union movement recently has joined in coalition with other fair trade activists to battle against unfair trade deals, including Fast Track.

I’m glad the AFL-CIO is starting to understand the deal with Mexico and Mexican illegal immigrants. Americans are losing work by companies moving to Mexico and the jobs that are left in this country, employers want to hire cheap illegal immigrants. Union companies or companies who obey the law and do not hire illegal aliens, are run out of business by the low overhead cost illegal immigrants. Thank the good Lord, the AFL-CIO is starting to come out against Mexico and illegal aliens.

These politicians are destroying themselves by not ahving decent wages. Who will be able to afford to buy their products? Certainly not slave laborers overseas.

“Fast track”, or slow track, (NAFTA, perferred trading status for China, etc.), it’s all the same to me. Until and unless American consumers make it absolutely clear to manufacturers that they will only deal with companies that give a damn about them, and until and unless American consumers make it crystal clear to our elected representatives that we have had enough of “global economy” lies and deceit from both political partys, we will get exactly what we deserve. And that is no consideration at all. Come on brothers and sisters, in this day of email our protests can be easy, quick, and effective. And do not think for a second that your buying habits are not constantly being studied and analyzed by people making a whole lot more money then you. Let THEM know where your heads are at by what you buy, and where you buy it. Personally, I have yet to even step foot in a Walmart, and I’m quite proud of that. BUY UNION, BUY AMERICAN.

I used AFL-CIO’s “EXECUTIVE PAYWATCH” data to make an updated video regarding 10 corporation’s layoffs over the past 22 months.

    Here is the link:

    Thanks for the “PAYWATCH” info,

The Fast Track must not be reauthorized anymore.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
