Scholarships Help Train Union Leaders of the Future

The AFL-CIO is committed to strengthening the union movement by increasing diversity in its leadership. One way to ensure doors to leadership are open for women and people of color is by providing opportunities for them to enhance their skills through education.

Now Union Privilege, which provides benefits to members of participating unions across the country, has developed the “Union Leaders of the Future” scholarship program. The program provides annual scholarships, up to $3,000, to help women and people of color with the cost of continuing their education or training.

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must:

  • Be a current union member from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Guam or the Virgin Islands of a union participating in any Union Plus program. Find out about all of your union’s Union Plus benefits here.
  • Complete an application form with a recommendation letter from a union leader who has knowledge of your leadership potential. Click here to receive an e-mail notification when applications are available beginning in June. The deadline for applications is Sept. 29.
  • Be a female and/or a member of a racial or ethnic minority, defined as American Indian or Alaskan, Asian or Pacific Islander, African American, Latino or multiracial.

The winners can use the scholarship toward completing an accredited degree, coursework or a seminar at an accredited educational institution, such as a college, university, community college or recognized technical school.     This sounds like a great program with a lot of potential.

    One think I’m curious about, though, is the recruitment process. Too often these things float below the radar screen and some of the most talented, eligible applicants don’t get a chance to hear about them.

    This does sound like a good thing. However, is there any hope of someone like me getting a break since “I’m a white person”. Sometimes I feel like there is a reverse dicrimination against people like me just because of my whits skin color.
