Congress must address the problem of both jobs leaving our shores and the influx of skilled workers being imported into this country replacing our skilled American workers with U.S. sancitioned low wage workers from forgien countries. The distruction of the middle class is what is taking place. This impacts adversely the whole nation. The ultra liberal and the natural business approach to lower and lower wages and benefits must be rejected and a sound, sane policy adopted.
America’s trade deals have been A DIS-ADVANTAGE TO AMERICAN WORKERS FOR YEARS……..YEARS AGO,,,,ALL OF OUR JUNK CAME FROM JAPAN,,,,,,REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR ALL OF OUR JUNK NOW COMES FROM CHINA,,,,,,,POSSIBLY ANOTHER PEARL HARBOR IN THE MAKING. IF AMERICA EVER HAS ANOTHER PEARL HARBOR,,,,,AMERICA WILL GET IT’S ASS KICKED. WE DO ‘NOT’ HAVE ANY AUTOMOBILE -PLANTS TO CONVERT TO WAR FIGHTING TOOLS,,,,,,,THEY ARE ALL CLOSED ,,,,THANKS TO OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.
Follow Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul’s ideals for saving our country from becoming a third-world has-been before it is too late and start worrying more about us than the rights of illegals that are taking our jobs and destroying our wages. The only unions that can get them to join are the low-wage service industry. In all other industries they don’t join us in our struggle to maintain our standard of living and in some instances prevent Americans from being able to get a union into their shop. At this point I think I could vote for ANYBODY willing to address these issues, otherwise, nothing else will matter in the long run. As far as abroad- we need to stop worrying about what is happening abroad so much; other than fighting for worker’s rights abroad, thusly protecting jobs at home, it is far down on my list of worries. I am more worried about what has transpired here at home.
U.S. foreign policy of last 50 years has been to loot the third word countries. U.S. capitalism has, for last 30 years, been in a period of decline in tradition industries and a transformation of the economy. The net result has been an attack on the living standrds of working people. With the collapse of the Soviet Union 15 years ago, the U>S> was the major military power, with bases in over 700 countries. Treaties such as NAFTA, CAFTA, etc. rammed down the throats of third world countries, which caused the destruction of small farmers in Central America, causing the mass migration to the U.S. because there we simply no way to make a living for millions of people. Guatemala govt overthrown because it wanted to provide land to the landless peasanta, result in butchery of 200,000! The DEMOCRATS are as much to blame as REPUBLICANS in this long bloody bi-partisan foreign policy. Now the Federal military IS PRIVATIZED, with hired for profit mercenaries used.
—> IF ANY THING IS TO HAPPEN ON NOVEMBER 2008, LABOR MOVEMENT MUST BREAK WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, MUST BREAK WITH MILITARISM (THAT IS BANKRUPTING THE COUNTRY AND SOCIAL SERVICES ESSENTIAL TO LIVE), AND START A NEW SOCIAL DEMOCARTIC PARTY TO DO: END WAR AND MILITARISM. START THE ESSENTIAL ECONOMIC TRANSISITIONS NEEDED TO END GLOBAL WARMING. HIRE DISPLACED WORKERS IN AUTO, ETC. TO REBUILD PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, AFFORD HOUSING, SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE, GREATLY IMPROVED FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION THROUGH COLLEGE. RE-INSTATE TAX CUTS ON WEALTHIES INDIVIDUALS AND CORPORATIONS. THE LABOR MOVEMENT MUST TAKE BACK THE MEDIA…… INSIST ON A HOUR NEWS PROGRAM EVERY NIGHT ON PBS AND GET THE WALL STREE JOURNAL, RIGHT WING TALK SHOWS OFF THAT MONOPOLIZE THE AIR TIME AND INDOCTRINATE THE VIEWERS.
THERE IS SO MUCH TO BE DONE …. NOW… BEFORE THESE LUNATICS IN POWER START A NUCLEAR WAR OVER IRAN OR SOME OTHER TRUMPED UP EXCUSE.
BEWARE….. WE MAY NOT EVEN A FAIR ELECTION IN 2008 IF ANOTHER SO-CALLED “EMERGECY’ HAPPENS.
THE ORGANIZED LABOR MOVEMENT MUST AGRESSIVELY WORK TO EDUCATE THE GREAT MASS OF WORKING PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN KEPT IGNORANT OF WHAT IS GOING ON SINCE BUSH GANG SEIZED POWER.
It is about time organized labor and the political left went back and re-read Marx. He was writing about global trade in the 1850’s and was 100% correct. Read a little piece he did called “On Money” and see how he described “America” and American Culture in 2007…but he did it in 1860. It is as if he knew Paris Hilton.
The USSR and China (and any other country we call(ed) “communist”) had nothing to do with any thing Marx ever wrote or advocated. The reason American Capitalists so bash him is because he was (and is) so correct about the direction this country and culture is going in….downhill to destruction!
Organized labor’s future is not with capitalism. To continue to support this evil system is to march down the road arm and arm with the very people who will destroy us. Workers of the World Unite!
Globalism is about cheap labor - for the capitalist the cheaper the better. Labor can blame the Republicans but let’s not forget who got NAFTA passed and with rare exception few Democrats are against “free trade”…..No other trade movement in the Western World is Capitalist and they all have their own political parties.
Recently a number of communities in this country
have sought to honor July 4th by requiring that American flags be made in this country.
I have thought that if one, an individual/a company/ a corporation transfers its production facilities from here in the United States to another country, it should be left free to sell its products IN THAT OTHER COUNTRY!
If you break the social contract with the American people; you don’t sell here!
In short, as we required of the Japanese auto maufactures, if one wants to sell here, one must produce here- no ‘if’, ‘and’, ‘or’, or ‘buts’ about it!
Keeping production here, keeps the quality of what we consume under our control, and doesn’t transfer that control to other nations and other circumstances.
I do not underestimate the difficulites here, but unlese we face the challenge, we will continue down the road to a third world country, and in that passage we will find ourselves subject to forces over which we have no Constitutional or collective controls.
To make them feel like big shots, the politicians seem bent on giving our coutry away which is not theirs to give. This is our country and we want it back.
The next president should propose legislation to assist unions in unionizing workers in counties round the World. Once labor standards gain and are in greater balance all over the World, the World will once and for all have fair trade.
what ever happened to the Constitutional right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Bush has basically wiped his behind with the constitution and if congress acknowledged this fact they would have to pursue impeachment not only for bush but the rest of his regime. We are in a class war the haves are getting much more and the have nots are loosing much more. that premadona Bush who was born with a golden spoon up his a _ _ has no concept of troubles cause his daddys arab friends have continued to bail him out. He is set for life while many americans are needlessly suffering. the old america is gone and I fear what is taking its place. America needs to unite and follow the government guidelines listed in the decleration of independence or we can kiss the constitution good bye. If Republicans support bush they better take a good look at who is the majority of americans.
p.s. politicians are no longer the friend of the working people in america they only pretend to be so they can get our vote. america holds the power with the vote and we better wake up by next year or we could loose whats left of this great country. Democrats and republicans alike if our congressional employees are not doing their jobs we the people need to fire them. Truthfully I cant tell the difference from most of the democrats from the dishonorable republicans. what happened? time to wake up!!!!!
In Dec 2004, one of the principles I based the Balanced PArty on was ‘Balanced Trade’. This is based on volume, and not tariffs.
Trade can be balanced or imbalanced. Trade regulated by volume, and not by price, enables Trade to become economically balanced.
Artificial trade tariffs, which is the most we have been able to do is like trying to plug a dike.
Tax incentives for not out sourcing is also a long shot when considering that such incentives are overshadowed by manipulating the cost of offshore labor to make up the differences.
The Volume of imports is not regulated, and when putting a higher price on foreign TV’s ( as a example ) that are dumped on our shores, just means more compromise of foreign workers rights in order to realize the same profit for the foreign manufacturer.
By limiting import volume into the United States, the price of the import would increase due to level of availability and in order to obtain a reasonable profit margin. This is simple supply and demand mechanics.
This in turn would additionally dampen volume; provide less incentive for moving manufacturing operations off shore; while not having to be compromised in back room negotiations on import price with foreign governments based on our debt obligations to them.
When volume is the gating factor, then the volume that is normally coming through our ports would have to go elsewhere to be sold.
If China cannot sell excessive volume to the US, as a simple example, China will have to eventually sell to China. This in turn would require their standards of wage to increase in order to afford their own TV’s and other finished goods.
By losing the offshore incentive, US manufacturers would not need a domestic tax Incentive, while also not needing to lose theirunion workers.
The same principles of Trade Volume in Manufacturing and textiles, can be applied to agriculture, as well as the outsourcing of technology labor.

I agree with posts #4 and 5. Workers have been betrayed. Read Marx. Read Das Kapital. It’s simple and straight forward.
We need to dump the Dems, and the industrial-military-university-medical complex and organize our own party. Except for Dennis Kuchinich, very very few really represent labor. How can they? How can a millionaire represent the working class . . . except to deceive us. But I wouldn’t dump the Dems just yet. I think that we need to work within and without the Dems . . . as in the Progressive Democrats of America.
Instead of siphoning money off into waste products that we can’t use, such as bombs, tanks, etc; we need to put those billions back into our society, to allocate that money into primary and secondary education, into preventive health care, where people are taught how to care for themselves, into areas
that will help working people have a better quality of life and that will enrich the soociety.
First, one would have to uphold the rules as negotiated and discontinue with countries that violate agreements or commit unfair trade practices. One should also enact the Fair Tax in that it would allow American Companies to compete pricewise with the foreign countries(ALL) that subsidize the taxes of the companies doing business with us. The Fair Tax would encourage the $10 trillion dollars that Americans have invested in banks overseas, to bring that money back here for investment, thereby lowering interest rates. It would have the effect of a tariff on foreign goods, without violating any tariff laws. It would not only encourage many American Companies to return their jobs here, it would also encourage foreign countries to bring jobs here.
Fair Tax, Fair Trade= booming economy and jobs and investment in capital in the USA.
RE: 13 - To Rid Road - Your argument shows good logic. But on the assumtion of $10 trillion in banks over seas, please explain this with respect that we have all these foreign banks in NYC. In other words, are you suggesting that such institutional banks should no longer be international. There money is where they decide it is at any given moment.
RE: 11 - May I ask you to consider the notion of volume. Ccan could you comment on the logic of obtaining parity in that instead of a 10 to one ratio of imports vs exports, that a 1 to 1 ratio would or would not enable the US to obatin fair trade with parity, where the economy would be encourage to re-occur in industry and jobs in the US -
We are nearing the end of the most destructive administration in our history. These people hate unions as much as they hate Arabs, or perhaps more. We should not endure another Presidential like the last two. Lie, cheat, and steal is their way of life. We the people have to insist on honest elections. We need to free of NAFTA and the rest of those ill-conceived trade deals, or the middle class is doomed.
Number 0ne priority should be to improve the image of American Made products with consumers in our own nation and abroad. People in the USA need to understand why USA made products may cost more (ie. better living standard for the employee making the product and higher environmental and safety standards in the work place required of employers). The government should help promote products made in the USA and restrict or place heavy tariffs on imports that use cheap labor in unsafe factories that belch massive amounts of pollutants into the environment. Also, exporting nations that fail to ensure our safety standards on products imported to this country (ie. recent mulitiple recalls on hazardous china made products, Thomas train toys, toothpaste, dog food & Fisher Price toys, etc.) should be held accountable thus raising their own internal standards on companies building and exporting which would help even the playing field for US manufactures. That is the bottom line that we must ensure that our manufactures are able to compete fairly on the same levels and standards as other countries in order for our companies to succeed in the global market. Therefore we must work to make sure other countires raise their standards or face heavy tariffs or fines when exporting products to the USA to encourage fair trade.
Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate who has directly stated that he will (in his first day in office) cancel NAFTA, CAFTA and start the process for withdrawal from the WTO. All other candidates will, of course, never say this because they put corporate interests before the working American. Please consider Kucinich as your candidate, he will fight for you (he will also put in place not-for-profit health care for every American).
