Check Out Teachers Volunteering in New Orleans

by Tula Connell, Jul 15, 2007

Some 80 teachers and school personnel from across the country are spending part of their summer break in New Orleans—painting high schools, tutoring students and doing other community projects. We described their incredible effort here.

Now AFT, the union sponsoring the “Lend a Hand” summer program, put together this video that really shows the dedication of these volunteers—and the challenges still ahead throughout the still-devastated neighborhoods of New Orleans.

In the video, volunteer coordinator Darrell Capwell describes the range of support the teachers are providing:

We’re working on projects such as working members’ houses, we’re in the schools where we’re doing some painting or fixing up, we’re doing some landscaping, some of the horribly hit areas, and we’re also doing a lot of tutoring, we’re in some of the summer schools where we’re working with students one on one.

“Labor of love” is an over-used phrase, but it sure applies here. Check out the video.
