Union members were the first on the scene Wednesday after the catastrophic bridge collapse in the Twin Cities. Police, fire and rescue workers were there, pulling victims from the rubble, just as other union members did in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

Steve Share, editor of the Minneapolis Labor Review, gives us a firsthand account of the heroic efforts by union members in the face of a tragedy.

The missing included an Operating Engineers member working on the bridge and the injured included AFSCMEmembers inspecting construction work on the bridge.

Share also points out how the state’s failure to invest in transportation and public safety contributed to the tragedy.
