Candidates Exchange Barbs on Trade

by Payson Schwin, Aug 7, 2007

When the discussion turned to trade agreements, the debate became a bit more heated.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for a trade prosecutor to enforce trade agreements like NAFTA.

Former Sen. John Edwards called NAFTA the “perfect example of the problem.” The deal was “negotiated by Washington insiders,” Edwards said. “One thing you can count on,” he added, “is that you will never see a picture of me on the cover of Fortune magazine” supported by corporate bigwigs. (Quick note: Sen. Clinton appeared on the cover of Fortune not long ago.)

Keith Olbermann offered Sen. Clinton an opportunity to respond to Edwards’ veiled barb. “I’m just taking it all in,” she said. She said that over the past weeks, “I’ve noticed the other campaigns have been using my name a lot.”

What happened to the questions that we submitted via the internet over the last weeks?

Rep. Kucinich was the only canidate to state that not only these treaties but the WTO membership must be rescinded. These were designed and negotiated by commerce for commerce. Workers and the enviroment were never considered so they are both fundamentally flawed and should be redone.

Of course Hilary thinks NAFTA is good, her hubby was the one who screwed labor with it and she helped sell Labor on the fact it has protections in it. Well it didn’t when it went into effect and it doesn’t now - so she is just planning on continuing to put the screws to labor.

What would you expect from Ms. Walmart - I hope labor as a whole is smarter than the idiots who have already endorsed her it will ultimatly lead to the demise of Unions just as quickly as if the other canidate who wears a dress is elected.

Rick is right. Kucinich is the strongest supporter for workers. Do you worry that he would loose in the general election or do you think we should just go for him? Also, how can we get other workers to join us and not be sidetracked by bogus national security issues and gay marriage? Sadly I work with people that think Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh speak for them. Help! Somehow we have to get all workers on the same page.

If this is a labor movement blog reporting a labor movement debate concerning NAFTA that all labor deplores. Please tell me why Kucinich’s remarks to terminate NAFTA and WTO isn’nt even mentioned? Our labor leaders have already written off all the candidates save the precious few.
