BREAKING: Three Rescue Workers Killed, Others Injured at Utah Mine

by Donna Jablonski, Aug 17, 2007

Three rescue workers were killed and at least six others were injured Thursday night as they struggled to reach six coal miners who have been trapped in a Utah mine at least 1,500 feet below ground since Aug. 6.

MSNBC quoted a Mine Safety and Health Administration official as saying all rescue workers have been accounted for following last night’s cave-in or “seismic bump.” Mining officials now are considering whether to abandon rescue efforts at the Crandall Canyon mine near Huntington, about 140 miles south of Salt Lake City, MSNBC says. It is not known whether the trapped miners are alive.

We’ll have more as news unfolds. Meanwhile, read some of the disturbing background on the Crandall Canyon mine here, here and here.

Are there any heroes like those who would risk their lives for their brothers. All to aware of the danger emposed by the collapsing mine - the brave endured and forged ahead. All the time scared to the bone. They all drove on to free those trapped under ground in a man made hell. No body embodies the spirit of unionism more so than these heroes. Can one possibly imagine the conditions these brave would face without a union. Look how bad it is with a union. I am here to say these miners have our support and have exemplified honor and bravery to us all. God bless you and thanks for all you have done and tried to do.
