The 73,000 striking UAW members are back on the job at General Motors Corp. (GM) plants today after the union and the automaker reached a tentative agreement early this morning. Workers walked off the job Monday morning when talks broke down over job security issues.
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger says:
We are proud of this tentative agreement and we look forward to getting into the field and discussing it with our membership.
The strike has been “recessed” and could resume if a weekend ratification vote by members fails. Details of the tentative contract were not released, but at a press conference, Gettelfinger said:
For active members, there will be some changes. I think overall they will be very, very pleased with the outcome of these negotiations and the job security associated with it….I think our retirees will be exceptionally pleased with this contract.

The union leadership and the UAW’s GM negotiating committee of elected representatives from locals at GM plants unanimously recommended ratification of the agreement.
UAW Vice President Cal Rapson, director of the union’s GM Department, says:
We reached this agreement because of the extraordinary solidarity of our membership, and through a tremendous amount of hard work by the committee, they elected to negotiate a new contract.

Way to go UAW!!! Solidarity in action.
Congrats to the UAW and their members for showing GM the true meaning of solidarity and of the importance of a fair contract.
Did you see the bogus add in the New York Times today, Sept. 26, blaming unions for car companies going bankrupt? What a pile of Sh-T. American Car companies have missed the whole trend toward gas economy and now blame the workers for making the cars they were told to. CEOs f-ck up all the time and then the workers get blamed. Speak out and write to editors about the truth. America was the strongest and the most productive, in its history from the 40s to the 80s, when unions were the strongest. Then came Ronald Reagon and the busting of unions and the wealth leaving all the workers going to the chosen (connected) few. We have to assert ourselves` at every opportunity. Unions are what created the best country in the world and now the neocons are making us all slaves to the wealthiest .001%. Get mad and do not get distracted with bullsh-t about gay marriages or abortion. Do you think Republicans care about such crap? Cheney’s daughter just had a daughter while in a lesbian relationship and Republicans like Bush don’t support SCHIP. They could care less about life or sexual preference. They want to get regular Americans confused enough that they will miss what they are doing to our ability to support our own families with dignity. Talk to your relatives and neighbors about unions and how we built this country and fought in its wars and deserve to live with a decent income. Cheney and Bush nnevere gave a thing to this country, only to their own pocketbooks.
Would union members be so quick to sell out their childrens futures with a two tier wage scale? I would certainly hope not. Let’s face it not all of our children will have the opportunity at higher education. Some will carry on the Blue Collar tradition as our fore fathers. Do we want to leave them a future that will leave some in poverty? Equal pay for equal work. What message are you sending to the greedy corporations? That the work can actually be done for less money or benefits? These things were gained by our union brothers and sisters before us. Why give them back? So the ceo’s can get a bigger bonus? When workers make profits for these corporations and set production records, why do the workers always get punished by having to give concessions back?
Take a stand and fight for your future. Take a stand and fight for our childrens futures.
SOLIDARITY!
Yet another media “spin” to cover up the on-going defeat of the “business partnership” perspective of the labor “leaders”. This perspective forever hides the reality of corporate capitalism.
Corporate capitalism is based on greed (maximization of profit) and doesn’t give a damn about the human needs (living wage, health care, working conditions, retirement, etc.etc.). Every dollar needed for these essential human needs is a dollar less in profit. “Business partnership” is not possible with declining profit and bankrupt U.S. corporate capitalism. This is not a “partnership” but unending class war.
