If you’re in Washington, D.C., and want to take a stand against dictatorial brutality before you begin your weekend, the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center and U.S. Campaign are holding a rally at the Burmese Embassy today between 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., before marching to the Chinese Embassy for a rally until 6 p.m.

The Burmese Embassy is at 2300 S St., N.W., and the Chinese Embassy is at 2300 Connecticut Ave.

Another action option: The Campaign for Human Rights and Democracy in Burma offers several online actions here

After days of protest by thousands of monks and their supporters against the military regime, Burma’s goverment has killed at least nine pro-democracy supporters and arrested hundreds more. Burmese bloggers are defying security forces and keeping the world informed about events as they happen.

Check out these posts here, here and here at Mahablog, which is following the events.

Also, there’s a Facebook group in solidarity with protestors here.

Latest word I’ve got is the Govt there is pulling the plug on outside links. Keep asking media what they know and if we surrounded by crusading freedom loving right wing reports from FOX ask them to sneak in and report, after dying for freedom is what they’re all about. Oh oops having my kid die for freedom sorry about that.

Burma has had enough pain with the Japanese taking them over during WW11 fighting with the British, then the British and Americans kicking out the Japanese and now this.

It amazes me that the Buddhists, one of the most peaceful groups in the world, are being killed simply because they are taking a stand for freedom and wanting democracy. Sadly,I guess that’s the way it’s always been. There’s a lesson here, and that is that freedom is not a given in most of the world, and if we are not careful and pay attention to what is happening, especially now in our own country, we will lose it. Our wonderful document, The Constitution, that protects this country and its citizens, is being destroyed before our very eyes by this president. We are slowly losing many of our freedoms, and this scares me. We may end up fighting for our freedoms as well. Think about it.
