CWA Invites Members to Have Their Say |
|
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has launched CWA Votes, a new interactive site involving its 700,000 members in discussion about the 2008 presidential election.
CWA also will host an innovative online poll to solicit member input on the union’s 2008 endorsement. It’s an open, democratic and exciting way to get CWA members involved in the endorsement process.
CWA sent all presidential candidates a three-question survey and posted the results at CWA Votes. Check out the candidates responses here, here and here to the questions:
- Employee Free Choice Act–We would like to hear specifically what you would do as president to lead the fight to get the Employee Free Choice Act past the hurdle of a Senate filibuster and onto your desk for signature. We are happy to celebrate the passage of the minimum wage increase as part of appropriations legislation and would ask if you would consider that or a similar approach to restoration of collective bargaining rights for American workers.
- Health Care–Please tell us how you would fund universal health care so that it would make U.S. jobs more competitive and not disadvantage those employers who currently provide health care benefits to their employees.
- Good Jobs–Most nations have a trade policy that encourages employment at home. We have none, and we are witnessing a trade deficit of more than $700 billion annually while American jobs continue to vanish offshore. Please detail some specific steps you would offer to cut the trade deficit and help spur the retention and growth of jobs in this country.

I would like to post some observations about the phone company. Specifically Sprint that is now Embarq, my next door neighbor worked for this company for over 30 years and at the end was told by the company that he would have a cap placed on his health care insurance after retirement, limiting how much the company would pay. After that jolt here he is more than 10 years after retirement the company sends him a letter and what a cap he was informed that Sprint/Embarq would be dropping his health care insurance!!! That’s a heck of a cap, its more like decapitation! Maybe this company will remember what happened to Marie Antionete said “Let them eat cake”.
I am so excited about this! It is great that my union is asking us what we think about the candidates, very refreshing. I went to the site and see that they even have the Republicans listed, I hope no one is seriously considering voting for one of them. It is time for a change!! Thanks CWA for listening!
Tbend I don’t think my neigbor who worked for the phone company will vote for one of them after losing his health care benefits. If he does he spent too much time outside climbing poles!!! CWA I hope you can help this disenfranchiesd workers.
