On Dec. 11, voters in Ohio’s 5th District will vote in a special election to fill their vacant congressional seat.
Robin Weirauch, the pro-worker candidate in the race and a former member of the Electrical Workers (IBEW), has the opportunity to take the seat.
Although the district is heavily Republican (Bush won 61 percent of the vote there in 2004), Democrats Ted Strickland and Sherrod Brown took the 5th District in 2006. And Weirauch’s Republican opponent, state Rep. Bob Latta, just went through a “brutal” primary battle.
Plus, turnout is typically low in a special election like this, which means anything can happen.
A quick introduction to Robin Weirauch is in order.
Weirauch has called for a moratorium on trade deals that have hurt Ohio workers:
I believe Washington is broken. When I’m in Congress, I plan to shake things up and take on real issues that affect our families. Keeping and creating good jobs in our region by negotiating trade agreements that protect American workers.
Her eight years as the assistant director of Bowling Green State University’s Center for Regional Development gives her the experience necessary to make a difference for northwest Ohio’s working families.
Weirauch also supports State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation—vetoed by President Bush—to cover millions of uninsured children. At a recent event, Weirauch said she was “fed up watching the political games in Washington over children’s health care while 10 million children hang in the balance.”
And she will fight for those who have worked hard all their lives but face the prospect of an insecure retirement. “Too many of our neighbors have worked hard and played by the rules with the promise of economic security and a good pension and health care into their golden years,” she has said. “But, unfortunately, they found those promises to be shattered. In fact, Washington isn’t listening to these stories.”
For those of you in Ohio’s 5th District, don’t forget to mark your calendars—the special election is Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Good luck, Robin Weirauch in the elections. I am hoping the voters come out in full force realizing that this country desperately needs new leaders and a new direction.
