Who is the greediest and grouchiest corporate Grinch who has inflicted the most harm on workers and working families in 2007?

We don’t know yet, but not only do you have a chance to vote in the Jobs with Justice’s (JwJ’s) seventh annual Grinch of the Year contest, if you act before Friday, you can nominate your favorite green-hued holiday villain.

Last year’s winner, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., forced out on strike more than 15,000 United Steelworkers (USW) members at 16 plants in the United States and Canada in October 2006.

The company forced the strike—despite concessions from workers and retirees in 2003 that kept Goodyear afloat—with its demands for a new contract to slash retiree health coverage, close a plant and eliminate 1,100 jobs. All the while, Goodyear was importing, and continues to import, tires from plants overseas, including China. In past years of the contest, Grinch candidates and winners have included Wal-Mart, George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Cintas, Comcast, Verizon Wireless, Angelica and Continental General Tire.Go ahead and click here to nominate your Grinch and as soon as JwJ announces the finalists, we’ll let you know so you can cast your ballot for 2007’s Grinch. In Dr. Seuss’ classic tale, the Grinch saw the light, forsook his evil ways and returned all his ill-gotten booty to the good folks of Whoville. We probably shouldn’t hold our breath for this year’s winner—whoever it might be—to experience a similar epiphany.

Blue Diamond Almonds gets my vote.

Here’s what Blue Diamond’s Chairman reported at the Blue Diamond Growers 2007 Annual Member Meeting:

“Blue Diamond’s sales in 2006-07 totaled $658 million, the second highest in our 97-year history . . . only slightly less than the record sales of $674 million last year. We continue to develop new markets, offer new products, and partner with the most innovative users of almonds.”

Get it? Huge profits! Nonetheless, the company is employing anti-union, anti-worker tactics in its attempt to beat back an organizing drive by its workers who want to join the ILWU.

Boycott Blue Diamond Almonds! You’re liable to choke on their anti-worker bile!

    Blue Diamond for Grinch!

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
