Union Members Get on the Phones for Ohio Special Election

by Seth Michaels, Dec 10, 2007

In preparation for tomorrow’s crucial special U.S. House election in Ohio’s 5th Congressional District, union members dedicated their Saturday to phone banking on behalf of candidate Robin Weirauch (D).

Tom Curley, of Northwest Ohio Building Trades, was among them.

I’m doing this because Robin represents the values of working class America, and I want to build a better future for my children and grandchildren. That’s why I’m spending my Saturday here (see video).

Weirauch is campaigning hard and has pledged to fight for good jobs, better trade policies and health care. Her opponent, Republican state Rep. Bob Latta, is running a lackluster campaign while ignoring working-family issues.

National Republicans have poured $428,000 into this race, mostly in the form of misleading attack ads. Such a large Republican expenditure on a seat that went for Bush by 22 percentage points in 2004 illustrates Weirauch’s strong support and Ohioans’ determination to send an advocate for working families to Congress. As Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) notes in this video, it’s bound to be a very close race tomorrow.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
