300 Southern California Nurses Join CNA/NNOC

by James Parks, Dec 20, 2007

For the third time in three weeks, registered nurses have voted for the California Nurses Association/ National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC) to represent them. This time, the 300 nurses at Whittier Hospital Medical Center in the Los Angeles area voted by a whopping 87 percent for the union last night.

Whittier nurse Irma San Luis says the workers are happy about the win:

It will help bring a strong united nurse voice for patient care at Whittier.

In the past three weeks, CNA/NNOC also has won elections for 800 nurses in California and Nevada. RNs at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno voted to join CNA/NNOC earlier this month. CNA/NNOC now has grown by more than 350 percent in the past decade and won elections for nearly 25,000 nurses at 73 hospitals since 2001.

Geri Jenkins, a Southern California member of the CNA/NNOC Council of Presidents, describes the 87 percent vote in favor of joining the union as

an incredible testament to the determination of the Whittier nurses to join together and with CNA/NNOC on behalf of their patients, their colleagues, and the nurses across California. I’m so proud of the Whittier nurses.

Says Cecilia Caspe, RN:

Our victory unites us with San Gabriel colleagues so together we can improve patient care and nursing standards for all Southern California RNs.

The RNs at Whittier, a former Tenet Healthcare hospital, now join with nurses at the San Gabriel Valley Medical Center who are already represented by CNA/NNOC. Both hospitals are part of the AHMC Healthcare system.
