This Sunday, spend some quality time with Nikki Blonsky, Josh Bolin, Steve Carell, Russell Crowe, Ruby Dee, Kate Hudson, Tommy Lee Jones, John Travolta and Vanessa Williams. These union members will honor winners at the nation’s only all-union awards show—the 14th Annual SAG Awards
SAG is America’s largest union representing working actors, with 120,000 members in film, television, commercials, video games, music videos and other new media. The SAG Awards is the only nationally televised awards show of any kind that honors the work of union members.
The show will air this Sunday, Jan.27, on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. EST and PST, and at 7 p.m. elsewhere.
SAG members also know what solidarity is all about. The actors have been some of the strongest supporters of the Writers Guild strike, marching on the picket line and refusing to cross the line to appear on talk shows that have not signed deals with the writers. The striking writers, citing the tremendous support and solidarity from SAG members, agreed not to picket the SAG Awards.
This year, the nominees for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role in film are George Clooney in “Michael Clayton,” Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood,” Ryan Gosling in “Lars And The Real Girl,” Emile Hirsch in “Into The Wild” and Viggo Mortensen in “Eastern Promises.”Nominees for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role are Cate Blanchett in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” Julie Christie in “Away From Her,” Marion Cotillard in “La Vie En Rose,” Angelina Jolie in “A Mighty Heart” and Ellen Page in “Juno.”
In prime-time television, the nominees for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series are James Gandolfini in “The Sopranos,” Michael C. Hall in “Dexter,” Jon Hamm in “Mad Men,” Hugh Laurie in “House” and James Spader in “Boston Legal.”
The nominees for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series are Glenn Close in “Damages,” Edie Falco in “The Sopranos,” Sally Field in “Brothers & Sisters,” Holly Hunter in “Saving Grace” and Kyra Sedgwick in “The Closer.”
Five films were nominated for best ensemble cast, the equivalent of best picture: “3:10 to Yuma,” “American Gangster,” Hairspray,” “Into The Wild” and “No Country for Old Men.” Nominees for best ensemble cast in a TV drama are “Boston Legal,” “The Closer” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Mad Men” and “The Sopranos.” For TV comedy, nominees for best ensemble are “30 Rock,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Entourage,” “The Office” and “Ugly Betty.”
One of the show’s highlights will be presentation of the Life Achievement Award to Charles Durning, a quintessential character actor and highly decorated World War II veteran. The award is given annually to an actor who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession.” SAG President Alan Rosenberg says:
Charles Durning is the perfect choice for the Life Achievement Award as Screen Actors Guild celebrates its 75th anniversary. Throughout his career, he has epitomized the art and grace of acting and brought something special to every role. He is above all things a great actor with the talent to which we all aspire: the power to create indelible characters.
Durning has performed in nearly 100 feature roles, including the tap-dancing Texas governor in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” the lecherous Nazi Colonel Erhardt in “To Be or Not To Be” and hostage negotiator Detective Moretti in “Dog Day Afternoon.” He’s also portrayed the villainous frogs-leg restaurant magnate in “The Muppet Movie,” Jessica Lange’s father in “Tootsie” and Holly Hunter’s father in “Home for the Holidays.”
For 75 years, SAG has been an effective voice for the rights of actors—the superstars with names high on the marquees and the less-famous working actors trying to make a living in film, TV, video games, commercials and music videos.
The SAG awards are the only accolades in the entertainment industry devoted solely to actors honoring actors. Two randomly selected panels–one for television and one for film—each comprised of 2,100 Guild members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees. The award winners then are chosen in a vote by the union’s members.
