McCain Revealed: Who Is the Real John McCain?

Bookmark and Share

by Seth Michaels, Mar 12, 2008

Today, we at the AFL-CIO are unveiling McCain Revealed, a campaign to tell the real story about Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the Republican nominee for president.

McCain has built a media-friendly reputation as a “maverick” and moderate. But there’s nothing moderate about McCain, a loyal ally of Bush who has consistently and perniciously voted against the interests of working families in his decades-long career in Washington.

Our new McCain Revealed website features an interactive McCain briefing book that answers the questions we need to know before we go to the polls, including where he stands on the economy, jobs, health care, trade, workers’ rights, retirement security and the Bush administration. The briefing book also features facts about the economy and stories of real workers hurt by the McCain-Bush agenda.

When you page through the briefing book, you’ll learn:

  • McCain admits he doesn’t really understand the economy.
  • McCain systematically votes for bad trade agreements like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) that don’t protect workers.
  • McCain voted to block the Employee Free Choice Act and doesn’t support bargaining rights for federal workers.
  • McCain has voted to privatize Social Security.
  • McCain’s health care plan would raise taxes and wouldn’t cut costs or cover more people.
  • McCain voted 89 percent of the time with Bush, and in 2007, he was a Bush McClone, voting with Bush 95 percent of the time.

The website is just one part of the AFL-CIO’s largest grassroots mobilization in history. Through worksite fliers, media events and member-to-member communication, the AFL-CIO will educate union members and working families in preparation for the 2008 elections.

The AFL-CIO Executive Council has not yet made an endorsement for a 2008 presidential candidate. The AFL-CIO will continue the Working Families Vote 2008 campaign to help elect a worker-friendly Congress and president.

    You know what’s awesome? When this website reports on workers organizing.

    You know what’s not?

    When the AFL-CIO just seems like another 527 group.

    It’s great to see that somebody is campaigning about John McCain, as he’s clearly putting no effort into his own campaign at this point! And I think he’s laying low so that all the focus is on the Democratic party tearing itself apart. Here’s hoping your campaign will help to draw the snake out of the grass, as it were!

    I run a blog for Hotcards.com, a union printer, and I just posted about the campaign here: http://www.hotcards.com/blog/3/174.html. Hope the use of images is okay.

    John McCain will do a good job as president. He’ll do what is best for America and it’s people. He isn’t giving a bunch of false promises like others either. Nobody can wave a magic wand and make all problems that realistically exist go away. No one person is responsible for the problems that now exist either. What must be done to make America better for everyone, must be done right with the guidance of our next president only. Not everyone dislikes president Bush either. I wouldn’t vote for a democrat if my life depended on it, they’re all full of hot air. The governor of California a republican is now apologizing for not being able to keep his, why? Because he said he was naive! What would happen if that were our president? Please think clearly when it comes to who you vote, personality is not what it’s all about to be president, intellect, logic, foresight, hindsight are only a part of it. Being very realistic most certainly helps. Please stop sending out this kind of literature about matters you know nothing of the needed intentions of.

    This is nonsense. You should be going after Hillary, not McCain. It was her husband who signed NAFTA. Of course, NOW she says she doesn’t support it. At least you could work with McCain. With Hillary, you will only get the back of her hand!

      Bill Clinton did more than sign the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He PUSHED it. Hard!

    I am certain John Mccain will do a good job as president , if you are one of his wealthy friends, or big company, or big pharmaceutical co. ,or big insurance co.,or big loobying firm . Things will surely be good for them.
    I can’t believe a union person, could be for John Mccain after what the Republicans under President Bush have done to ordinary working people. Every one I know, is much worse off. You can’t hardly buy anything that isn’t made in China, and all those things were made by Americans. I do not buy the argument that people are demanding low price goods from China. For the most part they aren’t cheaper. It’s just that the big multinational co’s. can make about 90 % profit on the things made in China. Before all these unfair trade agreements American citizens bought American goods, which were made by Americans in American factories . Our government has not looked out for American employees. They always say that these trade agreements opens doors to markets for American goods . There is no way that can be true, when you look at the low wages and working conditions in China, and other countries. What can we sell to them? Does the person who thinks John Mccain think Americans should have our living standards lowered to the standards in China?
    I’m not sure this person has been living in the same country as I am. I have seen the hard times my children and grand children have been having making a living. they have a very hard time having affordable health care, and affording raising children. Both members of their families have to work, and still not make a good living.
    We deserve the America that our families worked so hard in the 1930’s , 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s to give us. It was the envy of the world.

      Couldn’t agree with you more!!!
      Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

      A little over one year ago:
      1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
      2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
      3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.

      Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we’re seen:
      1) Consumer confidence plummet;
      2) the cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3 a gallon and may go up to $5.00 a gallon;
      3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
      4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value
      evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
      5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
      6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.

    In this election, the working families have a choice of staying in the frying pan or jumping into the fire. We have a choice of communism, socialism, Islamicism or Capitalism. The only thing worse, is living in other countries.

  7. No Amnesty on 12.03.2008 at 18:48 (Reply)

    IMO any candidate who is in favor of amnesty in any form is against the ‘working families’ of the USA. In my book no one can be both pro-illegal AND pro-USA. What was it george bush said, “You’re either with us or against us?” That’s how I feel about illegals. If you’re for them you’re against us. ‘Us’ being the legal residents and citizens of the USA.

  8. jleedee on 12.03.2008 at 19:57 (Reply)

    Cynical - Sounds like you need to live in another country for awhile to get a little perspective. America is hated everywhere. Bush is hated. He hasn’t just affected the US, he’s done a number to the planet as a whole.
    Are you an anarchist hoping to vote for anarchy?
    The working voter in America needs to finally understand that “socialism” is NOT a dirty word. And they need to vote in their best interests for a candidate who will at least work toward fair trade and job creation.
    I am always amazed at the accusations that women vote with their emotions or vote for the best-looking candidate, when it’s workers and verterans who seem to vote strictly by their heart or patriotic stirrings without reason or consideration of the true state of this union we love.
    The AFLCIO is absolutely right to bring McCain’s record under the spotlight. He is a hero, he is a patriot, he is an honorable man, and there is no doubt of that, but his policies will continue to lead us down the path of despair.
    A vote for McCain is a vote for the failed past. A vote for either Democratic candidate is a vote for a better future.

  9. tmurf.1 on 12.03.2008 at 20:40 (Reply)

    John McCain is wrong for America because he is anti union and totally biased in favor of the business community. Hillary will bring a balance to the country with Employee free choice and universal health care. And with a little luck we can gain a bigger majority in both houses and have the intrests of ordinary people at the top of the agenda. If not Hillary then Barack Obama but not John McCain.

  10. realitycheck on 12.03.2008 at 21:35 (Reply)

    This report on McCain is just what we need. The only thing better would be a hard copy version for sale. Keep up the good work.

    Judging by some of the replies, I’d say these people don’t live on the same planet. Or maybe this site needs to cull out the Republican trolls who attempt to force their agenda on union members with distortions, false accusations and lies. There’s only one candidate out there who is truly against unfair trade agreements, and it isn’t Clinton or McCain. It remains to be seen if America has too many morons, redneck bigots, or warmongers for Obama to get elected.

    While John “W” is running around the country, stuffing his coffers, I can think of nothing more fun than to provide the local media and citizenry with a few facts. In the meantime, I’ve posted about this effort over at the new progressive blog EENR (www.eenrblog.com).

    We’re all in this together, despite the best efforts of the wealthiest over the past 7+ years!

  12. jleedee on 13.03.2008 at 20:00 (Reply)

    Oh, and I need to point out that if anyone thinks Hillary will be able to solve anything or put any of her policies into action, you will be sorely disappointed. Think about all the Republicans who despise her and her husband. They will block anything and everything she tries to accomplish. Think about the “suicide voters” who are McCain supporters but went out to vote for Hillary.
    They know exactly who they can beat in the fall and how. Thank you realitycheck!

    I wonder who awsum87 thinks , runs this country. We are still living under the same administration, and his Republican cohorts in congress are still calling the shots. You can’t blame these troubles on Democrats. They have been unable to enact anything that will help our people out. Everything the Democrats have tried to enact, has been changed by the Republicans, so that any benefit goes to big business, big finance and insurance co’s, and pharmaceutical co’s.
    The Republicans pay a whole lot more attention to Wall St. , than they do to main st. AS soon as someone on Wall St. complains, they lower interest rates. You know who that hurts? Millions of people like myself,( a retired USWA mechanic from Alcoa) I don’t have money in the stock market, but in cd’s , and money market accts. Many people depend on the interest they get from these kinds of accts for income, and now they are not only not making anything, they aren’t keeping up with inflation.
    I have heard other people say that they expected more when the Democrats won control of congress. We were naive. You have to have a whole lot more numbers to change anything. I can remember when I was a young man, that Reps. and Dems. disagreed, but they were usually be civil and work together for America, rather than an idealogy.
    Thank you
