McCain Doesn’t Get It on Infrastructure Needs

by Seth Michaels, May 1, 2008

It seems Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) doesn’t understand a lot of things—health care, the economy, the housing market—but his latest statement is nothing short of baffling.

The bridge in Minneapolis didn’t collapse because there wasn’t enough money. The bridge in Minneapolis collapsed because so much money was spent on wasteful, unnecessary pork-barrel projects.

Actually, no. The I-35 bridge in Minnesota collapsed last August during rush hour traffic, killing five people, because like other parts of our vital national infrastructure, the bridge had been neglected and underfunded for far too long. Our bridges, roads and schools are decaying in large part because politicians like George W. Bush and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) have sacrificed infrastructure funding to score political points.

Our nation’s infrastructure is crucial to the functioning of our economy, and investment in infrastructure protects lives and creates jobs. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that every $1 billion in infrastructure investment creates $2 billion in new economic activity, and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) has estimated that every $1 billion investment in infrastructure creates 42,000 jobs.

Last year, the AFL-CIO Executive Council called on Congress and the president to invest in America by putting resources into roads, bridges, water systems, railroads and other crucial infrastructure components. And this year, AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney said that investment in infrastructure was an important part of the economic stimulus needed to turn around America.

Sen. McCain needs to listen to the experts rather than trying to exploit tragedy for political gain. Investing in America’s infrastructure will save lives, create much-needed jobs and build real prosperity.

Everyone benefits directly from good roads and bridges. Additionally, the construction pay checks paying real wages stimulate the economy across the board.

When will the big shots figure out that you can’t buy a home or a new car on $8 to $10 an hour clerk wages in the “NEW” service economy!

You also can’t take a vacation, go out to eat or buy new clothing when all you earn is going into the gas tank of your car!

I’m curious how these people can even afford to rent an apartment.

This economy really shouldn’t be so baffling to John McCain, you’ve got too many people earning too little!

McCain, like Bush are out of touch with the real people of America, that’s why it irks me everytime Bush mentions in his speeches here and overseas “the American people”, becasue he does not represent us. McCain married into wealth, and I’m sure he no longer has nightmares of Viet Nam in his plush surroundings.

He who votes for McSame, is the real unpatriotic fool!

The title says it best, “McCain Doesn’t get it.” I never believed he did. Bush doesn’t get it either, nor Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Rice, Petraeus, the Supreme Court Justices, etc. etc. etc. They are all puppets for the “oil war machine”, which takes the necessary funds away from the building and safeguarding of this country’s infrastructure and which continues to drain this country dry of ALL its resources (people included).
