Yacht Party Republicans Sail Away Tax Free in California

Here’s one from the “just-when-you-think-you’ve-seen-it-all” file.

California is facing a $20 billion budget shortfall. Teachers are getting pink slips. Health care, social service, education and other budgets are being slashed to the bone. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) warns that all Californians should get ready for some budget belt-tightening.

Well, almost all Californians.

Republican legislators twice this year blocked moves to close a tax loophole for their super-wealthy friends—the ones who just can’t live without yachts or jet planes. The loophole let’s the uber-rich buy their floating and flying palaces tax free!

That’s right. Just when the Golden State could use every possible tax dollar to feed a kid, keep an emergency room open or put a teacher back to work, the tax-free yachting class sails merrily along.

The California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC) and the Courage Campaign say “Yacht Party” is a more accurate description of the California Republican Party and have produced a great video. Rick Jacobs on The Huffington Post says the video tells “the whole story in 60 seconds.”

That’s why they call them loopholes. If the wealthy were really taxed on their wealth, and loopholes were closed so there would be no way around paying the fair share of what is purchased and owned (hey, I pay dearly for every single thing I need to buy, in the way of taxes, fees and insurance), then our government would be solvent and actually have enough money to pay for the things this country desperately needs just to survive. The wealthy, narcissistically, protect themselves at everyone else’s expense. How do you fight that, when even the government is at their disposal.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
