Sen. John McCain came to Milwaukee yesterday, and Wisconsin union members were there to greet him and get out the message about McCain’s record and his plans for our country.
Despite pouring rain, more than 100 people attended the rally, including some in costume, dressed as McCain, Bush and their millionaire allies.
McCain himself didn’t come out to meet the workers—he was attending a $10,000-a-person fundraiser, instead.
Union members held “Turn Around America” signs and kept the focus on the core economic issues that will be critical in this battleground state.
Greg Hinds, a member of the United Steelworkers (USW), said McCain needed to pay attention to the effects of trade agreements on jobs.
Through the years, the costs of our plant have not been able to stay competitive with international firms. We talk about free trade and fair trade, but what we need is something like a balanced trade.
Who is McCain listening to on jobs and trade? Well, one of his campaign’s top funders is a lobbyist pushing for the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement and another is the founder of a company that outsources U.S. jobs overseas.
McCain needs to support a trade policy that protects workers both here and abroad, rather than supporting a bad trade deal with Colombia (the most dangerous country in the world for workers trying to form unions).

In regards to the FTA with Colombia and listening to lobbyist, the Colombian government is spending money with more than on US PR firm to push congress for passage of the FTA while over 50% of the Colombian population lives below the poverty level. Many reports have shown the Colombian government to be corrupt and not representative of the people, . The FTA has been proven to hurt both American workers and Colombian workers while benefiting the rich and elite of Colombia who control the government. One must remember that Colombia has one of the most unequal distributions of wealth in the WORLD and many US policies are helping support and continue that. American taxpayers should not support massive corruption and murders of union members in any country in the world, especially when it is so blatantly obvious. By supporting the FTA with Colombia, McCain is showing an obvious disregard for citizens in both countries and a preference to a corrupt ruling elite.
