Join Nurses in Protest Against Profit-Hungry Insurance Industry

by James Parks, Jun 13, 2008

Members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC) are fighting back against insurance companies that care more about profits than people.

CNA/NNOC members, nurses, doctors, patients and Americans of every stripe will join in a national day of protest against insurance companies June 19. In more than 15 cities from Baltimore to Pittsburgh to San Antonio, workers will call for a quality, affordable health care system for all.

The largest protest is expected in San Francisco, where thousands will rally outside the annual convention of America’s Health Insurance Plans—the insurance industry lobbyists. To find out more or to join a protest in your area, click here.

We have noted many times that the nation’s health care system is in crisis. Not only are nearly 50 million people without health insurance, but a recent study shows some 25 million people who have insurance are finding it harder and harder to pay for it or are going without needed medical treatment because of the costs.

In fact, in the AFL-CIO/Working America 2008 Health Care for America Survey, almost all (96 percent) of the respondents who have coverage say they are worried about being able to pay for their insurance and care. More than half say their current coverage doesn’t cover all the care they need at a price they can afford.

Health care reform and the need for quality health care for all is one of the main issues for working families in the November elections. Of the nearly 27,000 people who took the AFL-CIO/Working America survey, 79 percent say health care will be a key issue when they cast their ballots.

    Universal Health Care
    A poem by David G. Hurlburt 2007
Health care is our basic human right.
Now is the time to stand up and fight.
Put our money and our vote up on the line.
Get up on our feet and walk a picket line.

Dial a phone or write a letter,
Do it so every one will feel better.
Why should only rich have medical care?
And the poor kids die but Bush doesn’t care?

Get out of your chair and in to the street.
It is time for us all to vote with our feet.
Show and tell politicians, turn up the heat.
If we all fight together we can not be beat.

The Iraqis get universal health care,
The rules of war require that its there.
Prisoners in Git-mo get medical care.
But not all Americans that’s just not fair?

What about the hard working poor?
They need medical care for sure?
The system is broken it profits the greedy.
Let us fix the system to serve the needy.

Bush and Cheney are the real Sicko’s,
Impeachment is needed don’t you know.
Denial of health care to all is a high crime,
Remove them from office it is way past time.

While we are at it Health care for profit must go.

Single payer health care for all is the way to go.

Overhead and profit is just another poison pill.

We have had enough we have taken our fill.

    Skyrocketing premiums, deductibles and co-pay,

Caused by advertising, profit and big CEO pay.

It must be stopped now and here is the fix.

There is a bill in the congress HR six seven six.

In The California legislature the health debate is still ongoing

While greed of health care providers like “Sutter” is growing

We know the real solution is health care for profit must go.

The answer in California is single payer SB Eight Four Zero.

    Sisters and Brothers,

This is our window of opportunity for real healthcare reform. Wouldn’t it be great to get health insurance off the table during negotiations? The only way to do that, once and for all, is to rid our country of the health insurance parasites. We need guaranteed, health care/MediCare for all, based on a single-payer model; it’s not a dream, it’s national legislation: HR 676.

Jobs are going overseas, as manufacturers are relocating to countries that have a national health plan. Americans deserve the benefits of a healthy workforce too, and it’s time we leveled the global playing field. We need those jobs here. America can no longer afford to stand alone among all the other industrialized nations of the world, who enjoy the benefits of a national health plan, with guaranteed access to medically necessary care!

With healthcare off the table, we can get back to negotiating contracts that include better wages, hours, and working conditions–without having to make concessions to keep whatever remains of our “insurance” benefits.

    RN4Mercy;
In San Antonio we are joining our sisters and brothers from NNOC in front of Humana. We along with NNOC fully support H.R. 676 as it is the only piece of healthcare legislation that makes any sense and leaves the private HMO’s out of the delivery of our needed healthcare system!

Reggie Cervantes the 911 rescue worker who appeared in SiCKO will be there with us as we join thousands of healthcare workers, nurses, physicians, trade unionists and others fed up with the profit first mentality of the healthcare bosses!

POINT OF CLARIFICATION: We will be at the Humana Building, 8431 Fredericksburg Rd. in San Antonio from 5:30 pm to 7:00 p.m. We welcome trade unionists and others who want to see real reform to join us! See http://www.healthcarenowsa.org (San Antonio Healthcare-Now Coalition)
