McCain Denies Supporting Social Security Privatization

Sen. John McCain twice voted against making permanent Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy—now he supports this boondoggle for the rich.

He moved from being a campaign finance reformer to a candidate whose campaign is run by lobbyists.

The former POW once opposed torturing prisoners of war—but recently voted to allow water boarding.

He’s flip-flopped so much on the issues, he’s now trying to say he never changed his position on an issue crucial to us all: Social Security privatization.

Once upon a time, McCain supported privatizing Social Security, along the lines of the Bush-led scheme to gut the nation’s most successful safety net.

Now, he says he never supported privatizing Social Security. But the video here shows otherwise.

The Alliance for Retired Americans points out that in 2006, McCain voted to shift Social Security’s annual surpluses into a reserve account that would be converted into private accounts (S.Con.Res., Vote #68, 3/16/06).

Earlier in his Senate career, McCain voted twice to replace Social Security’s guaranteed benefits with income from risk-based private investments (S.Con.Res., Vote #56, 4/1/98; S.Con.Res., Vote #77, 4/1/98).

So, does John McCain really support privatizing Social Security—slashing guaranteed benefits and putting our retirement security at risk in a stock market whose recently volatility makes it clear how much is at stake?

Or doesn’t he?
