CWA members sign on to the Million-Member petition in support of Employee Free Choice.

Starting this weekend, union volunteers in more than a dozen states will go door to door to help Turn Around America by encouraging their fellow workers to take part in the union movement’s largest-ever election year mobilization effort.

In addition to distributing fliers and discussing the economy, union members will gather signatures as part of the Million-Member Mobilization for the Employee Free Choice Act. When a new president and Congress take office next year, unions will present them with 1 million signatures and ask them to enact the Employee Free Choice Act, a bill that would protect workers’ freedom to form unions and their ability to bargain for good contracts and a better life.

The door-to-door canvass is part of the AFL-CIO’s Labor 2008 political mobilization program, which includes phone banks, worksite visits and union meetings. Union members will get a chance to talk about the issues that matter to them and get energized to elect a pro-working family president and Congress in November.

The U.S. economy is in crisis, with unemployment rising, wages stagnating and high prices putting the squeeze on families. Unfortunately, John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, hasn’t been listening. His answer to our economic crisis is to give big tax breaks to the CEOs and corporations who are doing fine, while ignoring the needs of working families.

McCain voted to block the Employee Free Choice Act, and he’s voted to eliminate the minimum wage, undermine collective bargaining and block assistance for unemployed workers. His agenda would undermine the middle class, and he needs to propose real solutions.

This critical election is an opportunity for all of us to Turn Around America for working families—and that starts with workers having the ability to form unions and bargain for better wages, benefits, pensions and safety and security on the job.

Last month, the Labor 2008 program kicked off with successful door-to-door walks in more than 20 states. Union volunteers talked to their fellow workers about the crisis in our nation’s health care system and the need for change.
