WORK STOPPAGES AND ACTIONS
AFA-CWA, United Airlines: United Airlines flight attendants, represented by the Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), rallied outside the Merrill Lynch Global Transportation Conference 2008, as UAL Corp. Executive Vice President and CFO Jake Brace presented United’s plans for dealing with the current airline environment. “Workers at United Airlines are united in our resolve to drive out those who have taken from our families, neglected our airline and lined their own pockets,” stated Greg Davidowitch, AFA-CWA president of the United bargaining unit.
IUOE, Absaloka Mine: In Billings, Mont., striking coal miners at the Absaloka Mine, represented by the Operating Engineers (IUOE), accepted a three-year labor contract with management, ending a nine-day strike, the first in the mine’s 34-year history. Specific details have yet to be released.
USW, MeadWestvaco: Some 100 local MeadWestvaco workers, represented by the United Steelworkers (USW), have been rallying in front of their Cottonton, Ala., plant each morning since June 16, calling for a contract agreement. Negotiations are ongoing, and job security is a prime concern.
UFCW, Fred Meyer: In Oregon, employees, represented by United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 555, will hold a community rally at The Dalles Fred Meyer. Workers have been seeking their first contract since November 2007, when they overwhelmingly voted to be represented by Local 555.
UFCW, Smithfield: The UFCW Smithfield Justice Campaign will launch a $200,000 advertising blitz with TV commercials and banner ads in the Washington, D.C., subway stations (Metro) and on city buses, seeking the support of pork buyers in the Washington area.
NEGOTIATIONS
UAW, Ford: Ford management told UAW leaders that the company will have to further reduce its factory workforce in coming months.
ALPA, Hawaiian Airlines: After trying to bargain a new contract for more than a year, pilots at Hawaiian Airlines, represented by the Air Line Pilots (ALPA), are rapidly losing patience, according to union officials. “We’re frustrated and disappointed with the slow pace of negotiations,” says Capt. Eric Sampson, chairman of ALPA’s Hawaiian Airlines Master Executive Council. “This is a billion-dollar airline with huge upside potential, and management’s latest proposal isn’t even enough to cover annual cost of living increases.”
Hollywood Studios, SAG: Recent press reports indicate that the major studios are moving toward making the Screen Actors (SAG) a final offer as early as this week.
LEGAL DEVELOPMENTS
AFM, “American Idol”: The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) filed a federal lawsuit against the producers of “American Idol,” saying musicians were underpaid because the show’s live music was re-recorded for reruns in violation of a collective bargaining agreement.
SETTLEMENTS
AFSCME, Manatee County School System: Manatee County, Fla., support staff workers, represented by AFSCME, ratified a new contract that includes a 1 percent pay cut to help the district avoid the prospect of layoffs.
