Steelworkers Power Up New Website

When you get a chance, cruise on over to the United Steelworkers (USW) revamped and eye-catching new website.

Launched earlier this month, the site features live streaming video, daily news, photo slide shows, audio reports, updated blogging and a wealth of other USW information.

In the “In Our Members’ Words” section, USW members, like David Garcia, speak out about what the union means to them. Says Garcia, a member of USW Local 296 in Tucson, Ariz.:

I have been union for 31 years. I see my union as an enforcer and protector of the workers. The union is a check and balance that keeps corporations from taking advantage of the workers.

In the multimedia section, visitors can watch streaming videos, including one that highlights the struggle of Liberian rubber workers for a union at the Firestone Plantation. Last week, the AFL-CIO honored the rubber workers’ union, with its 2007 George Meany–Lane Kirkland Human Rights Award for courage, innovation and leadership.

The section also features photos from recent union actions and events, and visitors can listen to and download the USW’s regular Internet radio broadcast, POWERcast. USW members also can submit their own videos about issues that impact working families.

The site also includes the latest news from the USW, along with union-related news from other media sources. There’s also a revamped press center, action center and brand new blog.

There’s a special section just for members, where members can update their personal information, stay informed about union issues, get in touch with union leaders and participate in the movement like never before by sharing information, photos, videos and more through social networking sites such as Facebook and Flickr.

The site also will feature video coverage and daily updates from the union’s 2008 convention that gets under way in Las Vegas today. (We’ll have more on that tomorrow.)

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
