When members of the Fire Fighters (IAFF) from around the country gathered in Las Vegas earlier this month for the union’s 49th biennial convention, there was a lot on the agenda, from political action to initiatives on fire safety to honoring fallen firefighters.

But they also had time to learn more about the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA), a hunting, fishing and conservation community for AFL-CIO union members, retirees and their families. Some 348 IAFF members signed up on the spot.

Launched in 2007, the USA is a joint venture of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and 21 unions. Said IAFF President Harold Schaitberger:

For many of our members, hunting and fishing isn’t just what they do in their free time, they’re part of who they are. The sportsman’s association is a great concept and will give IAFF members with a love for the outdoors and a shared interest in hunting, fishing and shooting the opportunity to engage in these activities through our union.

Since then, thousands of union members have joined the alliance. One of USA’s main goals is to support the TRCP’s long-standing dedication to guaranteeing access for hunters and anglers, conserving fish and wildlife habitat and increasing funding for conservation.

Here’s a good reason to check it out. USA members have a chance to win a trip for two to the Texas Motor Speedway’s NASCAR weekend in November. The package includes:

  • Airfare to and from the Lone Star State;
  • Three nights lodging;
  • Two tickets to the November 2008 NASCAR weekend;
  • VIP passes to the Beretta-USA’s private suite;
  • Pit passes; and
  • A brand-new Beretta 3901 American Citizen shotgun.

    Hey, I just utilized the link above and signed up! It’s great that there is an organization out there working to protect a sportsman’s ability to afford access to a decent place to go hunting and fishing.

    Several years ago, I was a member of the NRA. They always seemed to be focused on the protection of my right to KEEP arms. They never seemed too concerned about how I was ever going to afford to PURCHASE the arms to begin with.

    I will never forget the letters that Charlton Heston, NRA President at the time, sent me warning, something to the effect of; if I voted for Bill Clinton, he would take my guns away from me. Heck, the economy was so good under Clinton that I purchased 3 new guns during his tenure. Under Bush, not only have I NOT made any new purchases of guns; but out of desperation to afford my other expenses, I’ve had to sell 2 that I already had. I can barely afford my hunting lease to enjoy the ones I have left. (So much for KEEPING my arms) What good does it do me anyway, to own something that I have nowhere to afford to go and use?

    I increased the size of my gun cabinet under Clinton and could afford to go hunting and fishing in a cleaner environment. I decreased the size of my gun cabinet under Bush and can barely afford to go at all, anymore.

    AS A FORMER EAGLE SCOUT, CURRENT ENVIRONMENTALIST, AND AVID SPORTSMAN; VOTING FOR OBAMA WILL NOT CAUSE ME A BIT OF TROUBLE!!!

    if it was a sport, then the animals would be armed as well. It’s not a sport; it’s a slaughter.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
