Member-to-Member Walks Kick Off the Final Two Months |

Last night, as the Republicans ended their convention, union volunteers across the country reached out to fellow members to get them ready for the fall election season.
More than 10,000 union members got together at 150 locations in key states around the nation, and they hit the streets with a message about Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain and the change the country needs. More than 200,000 union households nationwide got visits last night.
It’s through member-to-member contact that union members are making a difference this election and drawing attention to the real issues—restoring an economy that works for everyone, protecting good jobs and making sure everyone can get access to affordable, high-quality health care. On these issues, there’s really no comparison—Obama has proposed policies that will help working families, and McCain would continue the disastrous Bush agenda of an economy that only works for the wealthiest.
(Weekend and evening walks will continue throughout the fall. Union members who want to volunteer can find walks in their area and sign up here.)
Side by side, union leaders and activists, walking around the country, talked about the presidential race and key contests up and down the ballot. Alaska, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are just some of the states in which union members turned out, energized and ready for the election this fall.
Julie Blaha, an Education Minnesota member, is one of the thousands of union members who took part in yesterday’s walks.
I’m walking on the 4th because I think the more people hear about Obama, the more likely they’re going to vote for him. This decision is far too important to make without talking to people I really trust. I trust my neighbors, I want to know what they think and I want to share with them what I think.
These walks are a central part of the AFL-CIO’s Labor 2008 program, the largest union member mobilization in history. These union volunteers are playing a vital part in turning around America and winning for working families.

We are pleased to see that thousands of workers cared enough to go out last night. We had our union members going out in south Florida, the threat of two hurricanes looming in the tropics did not deter them. The reports back were overwhelming numbers that our members “get it”, reflecting major support for Senator Obama. (Palm Beach-Treasure Coast AFL-CIO)
Far too many times these articles do not completely tell the whole story. Take into affect the real issues here and compare the situations. I know that Barack Obama talks a really sweet deal and knows how to give one heck of a speech, BUT what he does not want people to know about his plans is that it may sound appeasing to the working class but in the long run this plan will actually do more harm to the economy than is does good. Take into consideration, the TRICKLE EFFECT, that will not only cost all tax payers more in the long run but will also raise the already high prices even higher and the consumer will be the one that pays for it all in the end.
The trickle effect will be felt nation wide and will not be complete until the taxes are lifted away from the persons that are within the top 5%. These are the ones that own the big businesses that we all consume from one way or another.
To take the burden back out of their own pocket, these big businesses will raise the prices of the goods and pass this burden onto the American People.
Let’s say for instance, and I will use 10% sales tax here to make this as easy to explain as possible.
Before Obamas plan take effect: A consumer walks into his/her local Wal-Mart and purchases an item for $1.00. Now, when he/she goes to the front and the person behind the counter scans it and hits the total key and the total for the item becomes $1.10.
After the Obama plan takes effect: A consumer walks into his/her local Wal-Mart and the company owner prepares himself for the company tax increase this same item is now $2.00, so the consumer takes this same item to the register, except now this item has increased to cover the company expenses and the person behind the counter hits total, the price has not only increased but your tax is even more now. The new total is now $2.20.
This idea sounds good for the present but I ask everybody to look at the big future plan. This plan, I feel will only hurt the Middle and lower class and send more Hard Working Families into a downward spiral.
This is not a way to CHANGE our economy, it is just another way to play with the American emotions and make the government the hero when they are really taking more from the heart of this country, and this effect will only continue to get worse each and every time the Big Business feels their pocket is getting too empty. Now we’re paying $3.30 for the same item.
To me, this is shameful and should not be allowed to happen.
This is why I ask each of you to please do your homework and take a look at the differences in the Tax plans of each of these candidates before making the decision to throw this country to the wolves in sheeps’ clothing.
