SETTLEMENTS
SAG/AFTRA, Commercials: The Screen Actors (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) have agreed to another six-month extension of their commercials contract. The latest add-on follows a previous two-year extension to an October 2006 pact that was set to expire Oct. 29.
IAFF, Concord, N.H.: In Concord, N.H., members of the Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1045 ratified new agreements with the city after months of negotiations over wages. Settlement terms introduce a new pay scale, which allows for “wages to grow at a more consistent rate over a longer period of time than the old system.” The past contract expired in July 2007.
AFT, Scranton School District: Scranton, Pa., teachers, represented by the AFT, reached a tentative agreement with the school administration. Details have not been released, pending ratification.
LEGAL DEVELOPMENTS
UAW, Foxwoods: The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued a complaint alleging Foxwoods Resort Casino broke the law by refusing to bargain in good faith with the UAW, which won a union election last November to represent nearly 3,000 casino dealers. Mary Johnson, a 15-year casino dealer, said in a statement, “While everyone celebrates Labor Day, we have Foxwoods management repeatedly violating our rights as if it is above the law. Foxwoods should obey the law and sit down with us and negotiate a contract.”
ILWU, Pacific Beach Hotel: The NLRB will hold a formal hearing in November concerning a lengthy dispute between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 142 and Pacific Beach Hotel. Both sides have filed charges against the other with the labor board since 2004, when the hotel’s hourly workers voted for union representation.
ALPA, Spirit Airlines: Some 500 pilots at Spirit Airlines, represented by the Air Line Pilots (ALPA), filed a lawsuit in Michigan federal court alleging the company has unlawfully imposed a series of changes in pay and working conditions. The two sides have been negotiating a new contract for about 18 months. The next mediation session is set for Sept. 18.
