SETTLEMENTS
AFSCME, Washington State: Some 33,000 Washington State workers, represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees-AFSCME, reached agreement on a new two-year tentative agreement. Specific details have not been released, but there also would be additional raises for workers in high-turnover jobs such as juvenile rehabilitation officers and an extra day off each year in 2009 and 2010.

CNA/NNOC, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center: Registered nurses at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., represented by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), reached a tentative agreement the union is calling a landmark first contract with hospital officials. The settlement terms include wage increases averaging 29.5 percent over four years, fully paid health care benefits and no mandatory overtime provisions. “This agreement will transform the landscape for nurses and patients in Nevada,” said Jill Furillo, RN, the CNA/NNOC Nevada director. “RNs throughout Nevada closely followed our contract talks. The breathtaking improvements we have achieved, which are unprecedented in Nevada, will have a profound impact throughout the state.”

ILWU, Starwood Hotels and Resorts: In Hawaii, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 142 and Starwood Hotels & Resorts have reached an agreement on the first contract for employees at the Princeville Resort. Under the contract, resort employees will receive retroactive pay increases that cover hours worked from July 1 of this year.

MTC, Todd Shipyards Corp.: Washington State workers, represented by the Puget Sound Metal Trades Council, reached an agreement with Todd Shipyards Corp. on a new five-year collective bargaining contract. Settlement terms call for an average increase of 4.5 percent per year to be applied to wages, health care and pension.

AFSCME, Westchester County: After three years of negotiations, 4,000 Westchester County, N.Y., workers, represented by Civil Service Employees Association-AFSCME (CSEA-AFSCME) 9200,  reached a tentative agreement. Specific details have not been released.

WORK STOPPAGES AND ACTIONS
AFSCME, Veolia Transportation: Alexandria, Va., bus drivers who operate Fairfax Connector buses, represented by AFSCME Local 3001, are on strike. Company officials indicated the buses are being driven by supervisors and nonunion replacement drivers. The contract between the union and Veolia Transportation, the contracted bus operator, expired one week ago, despite the efforts of a federal labor mediator.

USW, NewPage: Members of the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2-9 will travel from Kimberly, Wis. to Miamisburg, Ohio, on Sept. 16 to talk with NewPage Corp. CEO Mark Suwyn about the company’s planned shutdown of their paper mill.
