NALC President William Young joined in the AFL-CIO phone bank.

With Election Day about a month away, union members are excited, enthusiastic and energized as they contact union families through neighborhood walks and extensive phone banking, including a daily phone bank at the AFL-CIO.

Last night, you could feel that energy as Letter Carriers (NALC) President William Young and 20 NALC members joined phone bankers at the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., contacting NALC members and retirees in Michigan. Phone lines had to be added to accommodate the larger-than-usual crowd of phone bankers. Extra water was brought in so the volunteers could keep their voices.

Young says he told the NALC members their union has endorsed Barack Obama and urged them to vote for candidates who support the working family agenda.

Saying John McCain is “hostile to workers,” Young says his message to NALC members is straightforward:

The key to rebuilding the labor movement is political change at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.—the Congress and the White House.

Letter Carriers can see the importance in victory in November for the Obama-Biden ticket. The staggering economy is causing severe financial damage to the U.S. Postal Service, reducing mail volume that has resulted in bottom-line losses that directly affect our jobs and incomes.

America must break away from the disastrous policies of the Bush administration. That will not occur if Sen. McCain is elected. Only Sen. Obama offers that change and with it a chance for America to rebuild its middle class.

If you’re in the Washington, D.C., area, stop by the AFL-CIO to phone bank. We phone bank through 8 p.m. on weekdays, and through 5 p.m. on weekends.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
