UAW Members Ratify Mitsubishi Contract

Bookmark and Share

by James Parks, Oct 6, 2008

Two years ago, members of UAW Local 2488, working at the Mitsubishi Motors plant in Normal, Ill., agreed to major job security concessions to keep the company afloat. Now that Mitsubishi’s net sales have rebounded, the workers have ratified a new four-year contract that provides job security.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger says the agreement will

protect jobs and provide four years of stability for our members and their communities.

Job security and the viability of the Mitsubishi plant in Normal were the employees’ top priorities, says UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles, director of the union’s Transnational Department.

This contract addresses those needs and creates opportunities for our members and Mitsubishi to move forward in these uncertain economic times for the auto industry and the nation.

The new agreement expires Aug. 30, 2012, and covers 1,264 UAW members at Mitsubishi. The previous agreement expired Aug. 28. Workers rejected an earlier contract offer last month.

    Good Job!

Unionize Toyota, Honda and Nissan next. No more race to the bottom. Tax autos manufactured outside the continental U.S. enough to level the playing field.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
