Obama’s Final Campaign Stop: UAW Phone Bank in Indiana

After voting in Chicago this morning, Sen. Barack Obama made a final campaign stop: a UAW phone bank in Indianapolis.

He dropped in on a phone bank filled with 50 UAW Local 550 members this morning and made some calls to remind union members to get out and vote today.

Through a strong effort by union volunteers, Indiana has become a genuine swing state this election year, for the first time in decades.

Obama is a strong supporter of unions and workers’ rights, and he clearly understands he can’t win without a strong union turnout and the kind of volunteer effort that has been taking place in Indiana today and throughout the year.

Phone bank volunteer Ray Staggs of UAW Local 550 was very happy to see the candidate he refers to as the “future president of the United States.”

The visit was just totally unexpected and such an amazing experience. We got a chance to talk with the senator and take pictures. I was kind of a nervous wreck when I heard he might stop by, but he’s really so down to earth he just fit right in like one of the guys.

Renda Staggs, Ray’s wife, is a UAW member from Local 933 and was also elated that Obama joined the union movement’s get-out-the-vote effort.

He’s just so polite and kind. He took the time to talk with several of us and even told us that if we came across any McCain supporters to give the phone to him directly! I’m just so excited to see him as president. He’s really just an ordinary man and it’s about time we had somebody who can relate to ordinary people in office.

Keith Neargardener, chairman of CAP (UAW’s political arm) for UAW Region 3, also was pleased to see Obama stop by the phone bank.

He came in and shook everybody’s hand and thanked them for all their hard work. He spoke with about 10 volunteers and was just very gracious. You know, to make the union hall your last stop before becoming president sends such a great message. It shows how he’s not afraid to say the word union and to embrace and support unions openly. It’s so great to have a candidate with that kind of commitment. We’re all looking forward to seeing him as president—I can’t wait!

The Indiana visit was Obama’s final stop of what has been a nearly two-year campaign. Tonight, he returns to Chicago where, like the rest of us, he’ll watch the returns come in from across the country.
