Worksite Leaflets Key in Georgia’s Senate Race

by Seth Michaels, Nov 20, 2008

Cross-posted from the Georgia Labor 2008 blog. Jimmy Hyde, Georgia state Labor 2008 director, reports that Georgia’s union members are working hard as the Dec. 2 runoff election for the U.S. Senate approaches.

Around the state, union volunteers are getting involved with the effort to send pro-worker Jim Martin to the Senate and send Sen. Saxby Chambliss packing.

One of the core pieces to our campaign is making sure we get leaflets out to union members at the worksite. David Carpio, the AFL-CIO’s political education and campaign coordinator, and Carmella Cruse, an Electrical Workers (IBEW) international representative, are both coordinating the leafleting campaign here in Georgia.

Carpio explains that the leaflets contrast Martin and Chambliss on the issues that really matter to workers.

The leaflets we are handing out compare and contrast the candidates on economic issues such as health care, trade and the outsourcing of jobs.

Being able to reach out to union members at their workplace is really a hallmark of what makes the labor program so effective and is essential to keeping members informed and turning out the vote.

You can download a get-out-the-vote flier (PDF) or a comparison flier about the candidates (PDF).

Cruse says that every part of Georgia is getting attention from union volunteers.

Our program is going on all around the state of Georgia: Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah, Macon and Albany. We are planning to hand out 550,000 leaflets to the workers out there.

Some of the worksites we leafleted at so far include AT&T with CWA, Georgia Power with IBEW and the Macon Tire Plant with USW. Next we will leaflet at the International Paper plant with IAM.

We are getting out the facts to our union members so that they can make a sound judgment on Dec. 2.

I certainly hope Martin succeeds. He ran a campaign that focused on protecting the American worker from special interest groups and lobbyists; his platform consisted of investing in health care and education, and about bringing the troops home from Iraq. The Republican incumbent was favored to win, but this race now is so close, something not even possible a few years ago. Should Martin win, we are one more seat closer to a filibuster proof senate. I wish him the best of luck.

Six years ago Chambliss aired this TV ad against war wounded, triple amputee, Max Cleland; that McCain said was, “worse than disgraceful, it’s reprehensible.”

McCain recently went to Georgia, fresh off his own campaign whose slogan was “Country First,” to stump for Chambliss. Both McCain and Chambliss basically told supporters this seat is necessary to obstruct the CHANGE that a clear majority of the American people voted for on November 4th. For without 41 Republican Senators, the power of the filibuster can not be wielded.

I’d like to get a little “straight talk” on why McCain is actively campaigning for a man whose political tactics are self-described as “reprehensible” against yet another fellow Vietnam Veteran, Jim Martin. WHAT DOES McCAIN HAVE AGAINST HIS FELLOW VIETNAM VETERANS? Supposedly, Chambliss received a medical deferment from being drafted to Vietnam because of a trick knee that has never kept him off of a golf course! “Country First” my eye; it’s more like PARTY FIRST and politics as usual for McBush & Chambliss.

Besides being considered for a position as Secretary of Veteran Affairs or possibly Secretary of the Army in an Obama administration, here is what Max Cleland is up to these days:

The battle between getting the Healthcare legislation that all of America wants and needs versus the watered down version we might be forced to settle for will be waged on December 2nd in Georgia…as will the Employee Free Choice Act, an Economic Stimulus package, fully funding No Child Left Behind, SCHIP expansion, War funding (or lack thereof), Tax Relief, Free Trade negotiations, Immigration Reform, etc. All these battles over such legislation will never culminate in their respective assigned committees as favorable as the majority of America wants; unless Jim Martin is elected in Georgia on December 2nd.

Anything less will set the table for a compromise.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
