Settlements
ATU, Port Authority: Some 2,300 Pittsburgh Port Authority workers, represented by Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 85, reached a tentative agreement, four days after the national AFL-CIO began mediating the talks in Washington, D.C. The Port Authority previously planned to implement its final offer.
IFPTE, Boeing: Some 21,000 members of the Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) working at Boeing ratified new four-year contracts in Seattle, Utah, California and Oregon. Contract highlights include a 2 percent to 2.5 percent wage increase and a 5 percent increase in the “base salary fund” each year of the contract.
USW, Stillwater Mining Co.: United Steelworkers (USW) Local 11-0001 and Stillwater Mining Co. in Billings, Mont., reached a tentative agreement on changes to the current contract that are impacted by the company’s restructuring plan.
AFSCME, Toledo: Days before hundreds of Toledo city workers, represented by multiple unions that include AFSCME and the Teamsters were forced to take an unpaid day off, the city agreed to reduce the number of workers involved and meet with an arbitrator next month.
AFSCME/IBEW, Anchorage: Anchorage Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and other city workers represented by the Electrical Workers (IBEW), have approved five-year pacts that must go before the City Assembly for approval. Police and fire contracts will be considered later in the month.
AFSCME, Bridgeport: Bridgeport, Conn., police officers represented by AFSCME approved a four-year contract that freezes wages the first two years but provides a 5.7 percent and 4.8 percent increase in years three and four.
AFT, Albuquerque Puplic Schools: Nearly 2,000 educational assistants in Albuquerque Public Schools, represented by AFT, reached a new tentative agreement that calls for a 5 percent raise.
Work Stoppages and Actions
OAPSE-AFSCME, PARTA: After a nine-month strike, bus drivers at the Portage Area Transit Authority (PARTA), represented by the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE-AFSCME), reached a tentative agreement. The union says it includes raises totaling 8 percent over three years.
SAG, Studios: The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) says it will hold a strike vote this month. SAG members have been working without an agreement since July 1. The mail ballot could take more than a month and requires 75 percent approval to pass.
Legal Developments
AFA-CWA, Delta Air Lines:
The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA), which represents 8,000 flight attendants at Northwest Airlines, is suing Delta Air Lines to block the world’s biggest carrier from starting the process to integrate the two carriers’ seniority lists until the combined group is given the opportunity to vote on union representation.
NABET-CWA, CNN: A judge has ruled that CNN violated the federally protected rights of more than 250 employees at the network’s bureaus in Washington, D.C., and New York, N.Y. The judge found that CNN committed federal labor violations when it terminated a subcontracting relationship with Team Video Services, whose workers were represented by National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET-CWA) Local 31 and Local 11.
