Memo to Chamber: Get Out of the Way of Fair Pay

Holy pay discrimination, Batman! Did you know that working women here in Gotham City and around the country lose $434,000 over a lifetime of work because of the gender pay gap? But the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is fighting against fair pay for women?

With a boost from Batgirl (see video), our friends at I Am Progress and Moms Rising are telling the U.S. Chamber of Commerce: “Get out of the way of fair pay.” The corporate lobby group has been the loudest voice on Capitol Hill against stronger fair pay laws. You can join in the chorus for pay equity and tell the Chamber to get out of the way, click here.

Launched today, the campaign aims to build support for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act and knock down the Chamber’s bogus arguments against the fair pay legislation.

Lilly Ledbetter is the Alabama woman who, after documenting some two decades of earning less than the men doing the same job at a Goodyear Tire plant, won a pay discrimination suit. But the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the verdict in 2007, claiming she missed a six-month deadline from her very first paycheck to file her suit. But Ledbetter did not discover the pay discrimination until years after she had been on the job.

The bills are important steps to making sure women are paid what they are worth. These pieces of legislation would make it easier for women to recover lost wages by requiring the federal government to be more aggressive in preventing and battling wage discrimination.

The Out of the Way of Fair Pay website includes a new study that documents the gender pay gap by state, profession and education.

Unlike the video where Batgirl has some major leverage to win the same pay from Batman as the Boy Wonder earns, most women don’t have a ticking time-bomb they can hold over their employer’s head. That’s why we need stronger fair pay laws and why it’s time for the Chamber and others to “Get Out of the Way of Fair Pay.”
