WORK STOPPAGES AND ACTIONS
SAG, Studios: The Screen Actors (SAG) announced it would delay sending out strike authorization ballots until Jan. 14 at the earliest. The union initially planned to send strike authorization ballots to more than 100,000 union members on Jan. 2, a date that would have put Oscar night within reach of a potential boycott.
CNA/NNOC, University of California: Some 8,500 registered nurses at five University of California medical centers, represented by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike to protest what they say is an alarming decline in safe staffing.
IAM, GKN Aerospace: Nearly 1,000 workers at GKN Aerospace in Hazelwood, Mo., represented by the Machinists (IAM) District 837, authorized a strike if a labor contract agreement cannot be reached before it expires Jan. 11. One of the biggest sticking points is the company’s proposal for a nonstandard workweek, such as 12-hour days, three to four days a week, instead of eight-hour days five days a week.
OAPSE-AFSCME, PARTA: After a nine-month strike, bus drivers at the Portage Area Regional Transit Authority (PARTA), represented by the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE-AFSCME), won a three-year first contract that provides raises totaling 8 percent over term. The contract also includes a $400 signing bonus and health care coverage for full- and part-time employees.
BCTGM, Stella D’oro: On Dec. 24, 135 members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) went on strike at the Stella D’Oro cookie factory in New York City. The employer, Brynwood Partners, is demanding wage and benefit cuts.
SETTLEMENTS
AFT-NEA, Pasco County School District: Pasco County School District of Florida teachers, represented by a joint partnership between the AFT and the National Education Association (NEA), reached a tentative agreement after six months of negotiations. Under the proposed contract, salaries would remain at the 2007–2008 levels with no raises or step increases, although employees would be given a year of credit for their service.
HNA-UAN, St. Francis Healthcare System: Nurses with the St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, represented by the Hawaii Nurses Association (HNA-UAN), ratified a new one-year contract, which took effect Dec. 1, that includes 5 percent wage increases and adjustments to shift differentials and on-call pay.
MERGER
ALPA, AirTran Airways: The Air Line Pilots (ALPA) endorsed a merger with AirTran Airways’ independent pilots union, the National Pilots Association (NPA), and plans to enter into merger negotiations in January. The NPA represents 1,600 pilots at the carrier.
