Rep. Massa: Employee Free Choice Is Necessary for America

More than 20 new pro-worker members of Congress were sworn in last week, and among them, Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) is wasting no time in showing his strong support for an economy that works for everyone.

Massa says he backs the Employee Free Choice Act and says he’ll fight to protect the freedom to form unions and bargain. He understands the significance and importance of quick passage of  the Employee Free Choice Act.

The Employee Free Choice Act is the most important labor bill in 70 years and I think we’ve waited long enough. We need to raise the bar for all American workers, and the Employee Free Choice Act will help us do just that.

While members of Congress already are under heavy pressure from big corporate lobbies to vote against the Employee Free Choice Act, Massa says he won’t be fooled by the spin, distraction and misinformation. He knows that the freedom to form unions and bargain for a better life is crucial to rebuilding the middle class.

This critical legislation is not anti-business, it is pro-American, period. The American labor movement represents, and in fact is, the only remaining force left to help move our country in a new direction toward fair trade and away from destructive open door free trade. I stand, proudly, with my fellow Americans to support the transformation of the domestic automobile industry into the 21st century and I reject the outrageously false attacks that claim living wages, pension security, access to quality affordable health care, safety and dignity in the workplace, are somehow un-American.

I believe it is now time to level the playing field, overcome employer intimidation, and work with business hand in hand to defend what generations of Americans have put in place-the American dream.

Massa, who ousted an anti-worker incumbent in a close race in his western New York district, is also committed to working for fair trade and good jobs to help revitalize the economy. It’s clear the voters who elected him wanted a change in Washington, D.C., and Massa is listening. His will be a valuable voice in the fight for a fair economy in Congress.

Myth vs. Reality: The REALITY is the Employee Free Choice Act Helps American Workers and their Families.

Despite the need for reform, critics of EFCA continue to misinform the public about the bill and hide the serious shortcomings of current labor law. Democrats are committed to setting the record straight and passing this important legislation on behalf of American workers and their families.

MYTH: EFCA will prevent the use of secret-ballot elections.

REALITY: EFCA does not strip workers of their right to choose a secret-ballot election to decide whether to select — or not to select — a union representative. EFCA simply gives workers the additional option of selecting a union representative by majority sign-up.

The AFL-CIO and its affliated unions and members need to do more to educate the general public on the inner workings of the Employee Free Choice Act

I was a local union organizer for 6 and 1/2 years and an organizer with my international for 13 and 1/2 years so I understand the NLRB process very well. The Employee Free Choice Act will be one of the greastest boons to organizers everywhere when implemented. The employers are using the built in delays in the election process to intimidate and coerce employees away from the union. It has to be stopped and this will be a good means to do just that.

Now for the downside… the employers are winning the Public Relations battle. Even my brother who is a PHD, could not find the straight answers on the EFCA and called me and asked why the unions wanted to take the secret ballot from the workers! I referred him to the AFL-CIO website and had a long talk with him and now he gets it. The general public needs more information on just how the EFCA works and how the card check is just another tool in the box. The secret ballot election is not going away but is not the only means to unionization. My understanding is that the card check does not automatically mean the company is unionized. A contract still needs to be negotiated and ratified by the employees. That is no easy task in itself.

AFL-CIO just emailed me a request for money for ads on the worthy Employee Free Choice Act. The purpose is to get Congress and the president to pass the act.

Excuse me. Labor just spent millions getting these folks elected. Don’t they have an obligation to pass this minimal bill without dunning working people for even more money we don’t have?

Anybody who trusts the Democrats is a sucker.

Card check is a huge mistake for the union movement. It will backfire when the inevitable pressure tactics start (visits to people’s homes, calling family members, social club visits, etc.) and stories about union thugs intimidating people start circulating.
