New Ad Refutes the Myths About Employee Free Choice |
|
Today, American Rights at Work, the national workers’ advocacy group, launches a new ad campaign to cut through the dishonest spin about the Employee Free Choice Act, a vital bill to restore the freedom to form unions and bargain and make the economy work for everyone.
The broadcast and print ads, set to launch Sunday, will push back on a massive and misleading corporate campaign, in which anti-worker front groups are blanketing politicians, journalists and the public with falsehoods about the Employee Free Choice Act.
Noting the connection between corporate greed, the stagnation of workers’ benefits and wages and the economic crisis, the new ad exposes the corporate disinformation campaign for what it is: a desperate attempt to maintain control and prevent workers from having the freedom to bargain.
Their new scheme to keep wages low? Spreading lies about the Employee Free Choice Act. The truth is, the Employee Free Choice Act absolutely protects workers’ right to choose a secret ballot election, but the choice would be the workers’, not their bosses’. That’s the secret Big Business doesn’t want you to know.
Part of a series that American Rights at Work launched nationally this month, the TV ad will be accompanied by print ads in Washington, D.C.-area publications. The corporate campaign is already in high gear—even companies that received taxpayer bailout dollars are dumping time and money into trying to stop the Employee Free Choice Act.
Congress needs to listen to the facts, not the big-dollar smear campaigns aimed at keeping corporations in charge. They need to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.

I cannot for life of me understand why employee free choice should even be disputed. As far as I can see, this falls under the ‘freedom of association’ clause of the First Amendment of the Constitution and is just as inviolable as freedom of religion or the press.
It is my understanding that you have the right to form an organization and call it a labor union, but it will not be recognized by the NLRB.
The freedom of association clause didn’t protect private member based political parties from being effectively outlawed from any ballot access.
QUOTE FROM 1927
Here in the last generation, a development has taken place which finds an analogy nowhere else. American parties have ceased to be voluntary associations like trade unions or the good government clubs or the churches. They have lost the right freely to determine how candidates shall be nominated and platforms framed, even who shall belong to the party and who shall lead it. The state legislatures have regulated their structure and functions in great detail.

The work place is the last fiefdom in America, and they had close to 90% of all workers as serfs. How in world can they continue to oush wages down if you have a GLOBAL labor movement pushing back? Remember the “glory days” of labor meant about 1/3 of work was unionized. Look what we’ve managed with under half that.
They are scared spitless that we will force them be the kind of citizens we like as neighbors.
the only thing that the Employee Freedom of Choice Act will do is to drive more jobs overseas to 3rd world countries.
Lets wait until we no longer have H1B workers, illegal immigration, and large numbers of foreign college students, before we worry about that. Next there is large management bonuses, and tax gimmicks. This could insulate us from problems from a long long time.
Also if the dollar keeps falling we won’t be able to afford third world products anyway.
Do you pay attention to anything other than the WALMART training films you are forced to watch? There was an election, and democrats overwhelming won. Our new president has stated he will penalize, (not reward) Companies that send American jobs overseas.
BTW has not paid much attention to basic econ. If it were just about unions the jobs would go to RTW states and stay there. It’s not about the difference between $17.00 an hour and $10.00 an hour. It’s the difference between $10.00 an hour and $10.00 a week. Just follow the textile industry as moved first to the US south, the the Carribiean and south and central America then to China. For some reason the corporations feel the answer is to cut labor and boost profit w no reduction in prices. There is much documentation that the only reason Nike makes shoes overseas is small % difference in per unit profit.
I agree 100% I refuse to buy or wear any Nike product, or any product that pays more to an already overpaid Spokesperson than its entire labor force
The opponants of Free Choice, talk of intimidation by union members. During my working years, I went through three organizing campaigns. I was never intimidated by anyone other than my employer, and the union busting companies that they hired to propagandize employees from voting for a union.
All of the organizers I ever saw were fellow employees, and they are no match for the companies that employers use to intimidate employees.
I hope Free Choie passes, but I don’t hold out much hope for that happening. The Republicans will never vote for it, and I don’t think some Democrats will vote for it either.
Maybe the NLRB could make a ruling that it would be illegal for companies to hire union busting firms. Maybe they could also require a union vote, be taken within 3 days of having enough card s signed .
Thank you
March for the EFCA in Los Angeles! Thursday, February 5 @ 9 a.m. Meet @ L.A. County Fed. of Labor, 2130W. James M. Wood Blvd., L.A. 90006 and march to the Federal Building in Westwood! Rally @ 5p.m. on S. Sepulveda Blvd., L.A. 90025 to pass the EFCA!
Why is it that supporters of EFCA seem to lump all opponents into the same category? I’ve worked for a non-union company for the past 23 years. The union tried coming in at one time, but the employees voted it down because our employer treats us fairly. By fairly I don’t mean that we have a guaranteed retirement or get paid to be off of work for months on end like the car manufacturers’ employees. I mean we get paid a good wage for a good days work and we have good health benefits, 401(k), etc. Unfortunately, the unions are responsible for alot of the blame in the demise of many large companies right now because they have a benefits package that is so unrealistic that those of us in the real world look at it and wonder how it ever got to where it is. It’s totally unrealistic to think it could go on forever…it’s like one big ponzi scheme, and eventually you have to pay the piper. We’d rather have our job. I’m concerned that passage of EFCA will only serve to put more Americans, and more US businesses, out of work and out of business. Wake up America.
