Sara Wallenfang, field communications coordinator for the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO, reports on the campaign for the Employee Free Choice Act.

Around the country, the grassroots campaign to pass the Employee Free Choice Act is gathering support from people of all ages. Here in Wisconsin, members of the Milwaukee Area Labor Council (MALC) are getting the whole family involved by sending Valentine’s Day cards to members of Congress, thanking them for their support of the freedom to form unions and bargain for a better life.

At last week’s labor council meeting, parents and kids alike took part in the effort to thank Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold and 4th District U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore for their past support of the Employee Free Choice Act and to encourage them to quickly pass it into law this year.

Sheila Cochran, secretary-treasurer of the MALC, says grassroots pressure from constituents is essential to ensure that members of Congress continue to support the Employee Free Choice Act in the face of a big-money corporate disinformation campaign. Cochran says the legislation:

is a fundamental part of economic recovery….Unfortunately, most large corporations do not want workers to have the freedom to choose for themselves whether to bargain through unions for better wages, benefits and working conditions. It is up to us to remind our elected officials to do what is in the best interest of working families.

Nearly 100 Valentine’s Day thank-you cards and letters were collected at the meeting to send to Kohl, Feingold and Moore.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
