If you’re in the market for a new car and you want to support good union jobs at the same time, check out a website that lists vehicles made by union workers in this country.

The “UAW Made” guide provides information for consumers who want to buy vehicles produced by workers who enjoy the benefits and protections of a union contract. All the vehicles are made in the United States or Canada by members of the UAW, Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) or IUE-CWA.

The list includes cars, vans, pickups and SUVs made by UAW and CAW members.

Here’s another incentive to buy a union-made car: The buzz at this year’s North American International Auto Show was all about the union-made vehicles. In fact, the show’s sponsors named the redesigned Ford F-150 the 2009 North American Truck of the Year.

Looking to go green? All three U.S. automakers also have made giant strides at improving fuel economy. Domestic manufacturers now are offering consumers options to conserve fuel and save money, including a dozen models of hybrid cars and trucks, flex-fuel vehicles, advanced energy-saving transmissions and clean diesel technologies.

General Motors has 20 different vehicles that surpass 30 miles per gallon, and the Chevrolet Malibu exceeds the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in fuel efficiency. At Chrysler LLC, there are 11 flex-fuel vehicles in their lineup and it is a leader in electric neighborhood vehicles. And don’t forget it was Ford that introduced the first-ever hybrid SUV, the Escape.

Layoffs at GM Lordstown plant ravage Ohio communities

General Motors recently announced plans to eliminate the second shift at its Lordstown, Ohio, complex in April, laying off 800 workers. Just last December GM cut the third shift at the facility, slashing 900 jobs.

The World Socialist Web Site recently spoke with skilled trades workers at the Lordstown complex. John, a die maker with 31 years experience, said, “The union is not saying a whole bunch. Everybody is just holding their breath. We gave up a lot of stuff in the last contract so that there would not be any layoffs. There are a whole lot of people in here who are making just $14 an hour. Now the union has given up the Jobs Bank, so the people who get laid off will only have unemployment. That is not very much.”

The Obama administration’s Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry met for the first time Friday morning. Video: GM workers denounce concession demands

Workers at the General Motors Truck and Bus plant in Pontiac, Michigan, denounced the pay cuts and concessions which are being demanded by the Obama administration as the condition for government loans to the auto corporations. Over the last three decades, workers in Pontiac have watched factories in their small city shed 30,000 jobs. Today the last remaining plants are threatened with closure as the union and the government join forces to force through massive pay and benefits cuts before the plants close for the last time. The World Socialist Web Site spoke to workers at Pontiac Truck and Bus.”

On the UAW “union guide” what the company is not telling you, is that a truck or car manufactured with a VIN number beginning with a “3″ is made in Mexico. The Ford F series, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and 2500 and 3500 HEAVY DUTY series Dodge pick ups have an asterisk next to their name on the list. Many of these are made in Mexico. Pop the hood and check the VIN on the firewall and insist the pick up you buy does not begin with 3 because that truck was made in Mexico.

If we the people boycott these cars and trucks, maybe Washington and the big 3 will get the message!

We want to keep the assembly jobs we have here and this is the best way to do it! BE THE UNION!

It seems that almost every vehicle produced with UAW labor contains components produced overseas or by non-union labor. I am interested in purchasing a vehicle that contains 100% unionized components as well as 100% union assembly. Can the UAW provide me a list of Union made vehicles along with the percentage of union made components they contain? Is there a 100% Union made/American made vehicle, anymore? Which products can I currently purchase that will approach reaching such a goal? Moreover; will the manufacturers purposely over-price them, so as to discourage such consumer conscience practices? The secrecy surrounding market pricing is what the public should demand transparency upon, now that we have an equity stake in GM & Chrysler. Appoint an Independent Commission to study and post those results on the Internet, Mr. President.
