AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka paid a visit to Philadelphia yesterday to hold a live radio town hall about the Employee Free Choice Act, part of the ongoing national campaign to protect the freedom to form unions and bargain.
Speaking to Pennsylvania union members, Trumka detailed the abuses companies are free to commit against workers trying to form unions under our corporate-dominated, unbalanced laws.
Now, an anti-union employer has what amounts to an incentive to break the law and violate a worker’s right to have a union. And strengthening the law to protect those rights is exactly what the Employee Free Choice Act would do.
Trumka discussed the three provisions of the Employee Free Choice Act—the ability of workers rather than bosses to decide how to form a union, the guarantee of a contract for workers who do form a union, and real penalties against companies who harass, mistreat or fire workers for trying to form a union. He said that these three provisions would protect workers’ basic right to form a union and give them the power to bargain for a better life and a stake in the prosperity they create.
By guaranteeing workers the right to bargain for better wages—by enabling them to get more of a share of the wealth they created through their productivity—money that would otherwise be getting socked away in executive bank accounts or gambled on Wall Street, instead goes into worker paychecks.
These questions aren’t abstract: they’re vital to real workers. In Arkansas, Regina Stewart of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 6507 spoke this week at an Employee Free Choice Act rally, where she shared what the freedom to form a union has meant to her.
It’s not just about the wages. It’s about the respect level. It’s about me being able to make a choice.
At her former employer, said Stewart, she experienced harassment for trying to form a union.
They threatened to fire you, they threatened to blackball you…to put you in lower-paying areas or to put you in a place where you didn’t want to be, if you said, “I want a union.”
Elsewhere in the country, Wisconsin union members wrote letters to members of Congress and attended a training to help make the case for protecting the freedom to form unions and bargain. In Nebraska, the monthly meeting of the Grand Island Federation of Labor focused on sending letters to Congress in support of the Employee Free Choice Act, as did this week’s North Carolina State AFL-CIO legislative conference. In Michigan, the state House is considering a resolution in support of the Employee Free Choice Act.

Former State Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis & Newt Gingrich have become The Newest Members of the Employee Free Choice Act Union Busting Club

Former state Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis has taken a job with an advocacy group formed by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich aimed at building grassroots opposition to organized labor’s attempt to change the way workers vote on unionization.
Anuzis will be the national chairman for the “Save American Jobs Project” for the group called American Solutions, according to a statement from the group.
The project’s goal is defeat of the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow card check elections for employee organizing in which unions can win recognition without a secret ballot election.
Anuzis said card check would lead to intimidation and harassment of workers and make American workers less competitive.
Gingrich called Anuzis an “extraordinary leader with … new media savvy and grassroots connections.” American Solutions is best known for last year’s campaign to open up more domestic gas and oil exploration, which used the rallying cry of “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less.”
Anuzis served four years as state party chair before giving up the post in an unsuccessful effort to win the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee.
Former state Republican Party Chairman UNION-BUSTER Saul Anuzis and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich join a growing list of anti labor Union Busting Republicans who are supporting EMPLOYER Rights to continue their FEAR and Intimidation Union Busting tactics, by opposing the Employee Free Choice Act. We need to be more like Move-on.org and hammer the Cong. and senet with emails from every union household over and over again. They don’t care unless they receive a couple hundered thousand emails. hand written letters are probably the best but it is verry hard to get members to do anything at all let alone write a letter.
I have a prorgam I am running for EFCA, I saw what the Ohio AFL-CIO is doing and went a step further.
Every meeting I attend, Local, CLC, Building Trades, etc, I have sample copies of letters, as well as the name of the Representative in the area, and have members write letters on the spot. Simply collect them and send them to your AFL-CIO State Fed . So far I have a 90% compiance with the request to write the letter during the meeting.
I don’t stop with members, ask family and friends to write as well. I realize this sounds very simple and low tech, but it works, it is the *KISS* method.
