SharedAgenda.org Promotes Freedom from Discrimination, Freedom to Form Unions
A national campaign is promoting the Employee Free Choice Act as critical to the economy, fair workplaces and the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) workers.
A new website, SharedAgenda.org, is bringing together supporters of the Employee Free Choice Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The new site is being launched in concert with a national postcard campaign asking senators and House members to co-sponsor the two bills.
The new site is a project of the National Stonewall Democrats, a grassroots coalition of activists for LGBT equality, and Pride At Work (PAW), an AFL-CIO constituency group.
Why link these two issues? Because nobody should be fired from a job simply because of sexual orientation or gender identity, and nobody should be fired from a job for trying to form a union. Unfortunately, these abuses are too common. Together, these bills give LGBT workers the access they deserve to the American dream. LGBT workers need the Employee Free Choice Act because the freedom to form unions is critical to protecting them from discrimination and ensuring fair treatment in the workplace and because they need the ability to bargain for equal benefits and fair wages to ensure they can take care of their families.
Sharedagenda.org provides numerous resources for those fighting for fairness in the workplace, including a fact sheet on the Employee Free Choice Act and why it matters for LGBT workers.
Stonewall Democrats and PAW join many other organizations in the LGBT community in support of the Employee Free Choice Act, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Human Rights Campaign. These organizations are part of the broad coalition fighting for workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain for a better life.

This should not be an issue, but I hope the Republicans don’t use these two issues together as fodder to fuel the fire they’ll undoubtedly try to build under the conservative Christian Coalition to confuse the issue here.
The general public that is unaware of the benefits of the pending bill are going to ask, “Freedom to do what-fornicate?”
You can almost hear Rush Limbaugh as he’d twist and contort the truth into an abomination, and then throw in abortion for good measure.
Perhaps the AFL-CIO could come up with some hand bills and small posters that could be posted at work to make sure everyone is aware of the REAL benefits of the bill and KNOW what it’s all about!
You are definitely right about the “Christian” groups. They are going to push monogamous heterosexual relationships as the only acceptable CHOICE of forming a marriage, and fully extrapolated, foundation for a family. That’s what they do and have always done. Therein; lies the connection they will make of FREE CHOICE with both of these pieces of legislation. Personally, I am reluctant to FORCE or COERCE others to enter or remain in any relationship against their will.
It seems to me that the LGBT community would actually have more to risk than the Labor community by combining forces. When LGBT promote FREE CHOICE, they are exposing themselves to harsher criticism for their cause, than the Labor community will draw. Don’t get me wrong! I believe in free choice in both cases, but the moral challenges against the LGBT community would seem to be even greater than ever by joining with Labor on this one. The conservative argument will most likely be that FREE CHOICE undercuts any notion people are born with homosexual preferences.
I, too, can imagine the conservatives will spread much confusion over SharedAgenda.org.
