WORK STOPPAGES AND JOB ACTIONS
TWU, American Airlines: Thousands of mechanics and ground workers at American Airlines, represented by the Transport Workers (TWU), protested outside the carrier’s Fort Worth, Texas, headquarters in reaction to the stock bonuses for top executives and managers that were paid out on April 16.
TNG-CWA, Times Union of Albany: Times Union of Albany newspaper workers, represented by The Newspaper Guild-CWA (TNG-CWA), are preparing to battle an attempt by management to cancel their labor agreement. Tim O’Brien, local union president, characterized the move as a “high-pressure tactic,” as contract negotiations continue. He added, “We will have to start picketing; we will have to start boycotts, and we will have to start mobilization.”
SETTLEMENTS
SAG, Hollywood: The Screen Actors (SAG) reached a tentative agreement Friday with the coalition of major Hollywood movie and television studios. The union said the agreement would provide a 3 percent wage increase and a .5 percent boost in health and pension benefits. There would be a 3.5 percent pay raise in the second year of the proposed contract. The last agreement expired June 2008, and the new contract would expire in June 2011. On Sunday, the SAG board approved the pact by a 53-47 percent margin. It will be sent to the union’s 120,000 members for ratification in the next four to five weeks.
USW, PCA: More than 1,500 members of the United Steelworkers (USW) at 25 Packaging Corporation of America box plants ratified a five-year master agreement that provides for wage increases above the industry standard, improvements in the defined-benefit pension plan multiplier and “substantial increases” in short-term disability benefits and life/accidental death and dismemberment benefits.
MULTIPLE, Connecticut: In Connecticut, state worker unions, including AFSCME, AFT, AAUP-Ind., Fire Fighters (IAFF), International Union of Police Associations (IUPA), SEIU and more, tentatively agreed to wage and compensation reductions in exchange for a two-year, no-layoff guarantee by Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
IBEW, MidAmerican Energy: In Iowa, some 1,600 workers at MidAmerican Energy, represented by the Electrical Workers (IBEW), reached a tentative agreement they will vote on later this week. The current contract expires April 30. Details of the proposed contract haven’t been released.
ALPA, Alaska Airlines: Some 1,500 pilots at Alaska Airlines, represented by the Air Line Pilots (ALPA), have a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract. The contract has been in negotiation for more than two years. Terms have not been released.
