Supporters of the freedom to form unions and bargain, including faith and civil rights groups as well as union members, are holding a 24-hour vigil outside Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s office to encourage her to support the Employee Free Choice Act.
This vigil, which began last night, is one of more than 200 grassroots events across the nation this week in support of the Employee Free Choice Act. With rallies, roundtables, phone banks and worksite visits, workers are encouraging members of Congress back in their home districts this week to vote in support of workers and a fairer, stronger economy. Senators across the country have received tens of thousands of letters and phone calls from union members and allies, and that momentum is building this week.
The AFL-CIO’s own Stewart Acuff is writing live from the vigil at the Huffington Post:
“This vigil is an unusual tactic in a congressional lobbying effort. But the vigil is anything but unusual in nonviolent action for social and economic justice.
“During the vigil we bear witness to the injustice of corporate America, the intimidation, termination and retaliation against workers who are trying to form unions and we pray that those who have the power to make change will use that power.”
In addition to the vigil outside Lincoln’s Little Rock office, union members and allies also will rally at the offices of other members of the Arkansas congressional delegation. In Alaska, union members are delivering a great video to Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and there as well as in Indiana, Montana, Maine and other states, union members are rallying and holding vigils.
Over the past week, the Indiana Alliance for Retired Americans has put the Employee Free Choice Act at the top of its agenda during its annual convention, and union members and allies are delivering letters in Virginia, rallying in Wisconsin, holding roundtables in Louisiana, meeting at working women’s lunches in Arkansas and at veterans’ gatherings in Colorado, leafleting worksites in Florida and hosting town hall meetings around Pennsylvania, including Mercer County and York. Allies from the environmental community in Colorado, religious leaders in Pennsylvania and elected officials in Maine are doing their part to reach out to key senators and make the case for the Employee Free Choice Act.
It’s a critical time for workers fighting for a fair and free chance to join a union and bargain. Union members and their allies around the country are stepping up to join the fight.

If there was ever a time for the Employee Free Choice Act, that time is now. Not only is it nearly impossible to form a union without fear and intimidation by employers, but union-busting has grown into a $4 billion a year business in the U.S. alone. Companies that previously had good relationships with their union employees have been emboldened by weak labor laws. One of those is the McGraw-Hill Companies. Read more at:
